McCoy Redhead Paint?

I know there was a recent post on this subject, which I can't seem to find, but did we ever decide what red paint would be good to paint McCoy heads with?

Go look in the classifieds, page 2 about 5 down, under "WTD: McCoy .35 RedHeads" (or something like that.)

I haven't tried to paint my K&B Greenheads because the PlastiKote colors aren't very close. They were all in stock here at the local Pep Boys, though....

Hi Dan,

Dupli-color Ford Red, #DE1605 Engine Enamel is a near perfect match. Should be able to get it at any automotive parts store.

I did, and the heads I painted look like *new*. Was really good on a RH 40 I picked up that was real oily. When cleaned the dag gone thing must not have been run much! Had to go through a break in and with the new paint job on the head, it looks and runs like new.

I sand blasted my heads, and used that Dupli - Color Ford engine red. They look pretty good, and probably within McCoy color specs.

Hey Dan,

I ususally use paint stripper to get the old paint off. Leave them in overnight. Some require a scrubbing with a small scrub brush and a second dipping, but that ususally gets it right down to the bare metal. Did you realy sand blast the heads? Glass beads maybe?

Just like the original paint, the dupli-color won't last forever and will turn kind of a ruddy color after a while from the heat and oil, but it's not that much trouble to redo.

Bill: Thanks for the vote of confidence, I ain't no McCoy expert. Just what I've learned the last couple of years from rebuilding a few. The dupli-color does dress them right up pretty close to original.

If you glass bead blast the head and then use Epoxy Primer prior to painting you'll find that the paint will last longer won’t chip and will not fade or discolor from the heat of combustion.

I wouldn't sand blast any engine parts because the sand granules are sharp edged and will embed small particles in the aluminum only to come loose later (like when the engine is running).

When I was up in Canada a couple of years ago, I some some engines re-done by Greg Davis. These engines were jewels, machined new pistons ect... the heads were painted with Ford Tractor Red. I suspect just about any paint won't last except powder-coating. He even painted Torpedo green heads that looked original. His engine work is a labor of love, just wonderful work, Jim J.
