Well, the US is leading after the first round. Bill in 3rd, Paul in 4th and Ted in 8th. I'd copy the table, but can't seem to get it to work right now.

Rob Gruber is in 4th in junior so far.

1 United States of America
2 France
3 Ukraine
4 Japan
5 Russia
6 Italy
7 Germany
8 Great Britain
9 Finland
10 Canada
11 South Africa
12 China
13 New Zealand

Randy

edit: OK, I managed to post this. Current team results after one round.

Thanks, Randy!

Wow! Am I getting this right? PW moves from 29th to 4th? Can anyone give us desk-bound stunt junkies the story here?

They flew 28 flights on day one. Half of round 1. Then on Day two they finish the rest. Until then all who havent flown are in 29th position. After the second day the end of round one PW is in 4th place. 29th just meant he hadnt flown his first flight.

Two rounds takes four days. Then they cut to 15 I think and fly for the win.

Though it really doesn't mean much at this point, the Chinese are in 12th. That's interesting.

Hi Randy,
Dont forget that the "real" contest starts with the top 15 final, this is just qualifying. It is usual for the top teams to get all 3 flyers into the final - looks like the US will, for sure, but not so clear for any other team. The French and Ukraine teams have "2 in, 1 out" at the moment. In practical terms the qualifying scores only count (for team placing, that is) when not all of the team is in the finals/fly off.

So for the 2 Chinese who did not fly (anyone know why?), if they qualify 14th & 15th, in the second elimination round that's good enough. There is a lot of contest strategy in a w/champs!
Cheers,
Dave

Edit: The only other team, beside the US, with 100% of the team(so far) in the flyoff is Slovakia (OK,OK, they've only got a 2 man team) - well done, Igor!!

No mystery. Niu and Han were scheduled to fly on Tuesday, and they didn't get here till Tuesday night - hence no score.

Dave,

Well, that was why I said it doesn't really mean much. Brett explained the Chinese placing by pointing out that 2 guys didn't fly. And as you point out, placing right now really doesn't mean much, just getting your guys into the the next round.

I was more commenting on the the interesting way this progresses. Can't wait to see how things go today.

So how does the scoring work at the worlds? Why are the scores so high? Must be different than at the nats? Just wondering....

Duck,

It's FAI scoring. I mean, you are from Canada. Don't you guys use FAI?

If I remember it right, it's 0-10 points per maneuver multiplied by a k-factor (difficulty level) for each maneuver. The supposition here is that a square eight is harder to do than flying inverted so there should be a difficulty factor assigned to each maneuver based on how hard it is to do. Much like the AMA scoring, there are both good and bad points to this approach.

Oh, Yeah, so its like figure skating, eh. Seen that at an Olympics where the russians won, even though they fell and the canadians did not. See ya in Vancouver Randy........
