AMA line size requirements

What are the AMA rules for line size. We are flying .15 to .40 size planes. Have been using .015 on the smaller planes and .018 on the larger planes, .35's and 40's. Would like to know what the standards are. Also have a scale twin with 2-Fox .35's, are .018 lines OK for that plane?

Thanks for the input, we have been using the .018's on our .35 and .40 planes. I'll step down a size.

It would be a good idea to purchase an AMA rulebook, available from the Academy of Model Aeronautcs web site. A good investment at $2.50.
It has all the line size requirements.

There is a table of line sizes shown on the first page of the "Control Line Aerobatics (part 3)" link. The link direct to those PDF files is

If you go to the AMA site, I think you can get access to the rule book (I think it is under "publications"). Line sizes are covered under the "General CL" section (as best I remember)

Otherwise you are fine with line sizes. 0.015" 's are good up to 40 sized engines, and for the 15 engine, you could drop to 0.012 ".

Remember that these line sizes are a necessity for competition, and a good idea for non-competition--aka sport flying. The AMA safety code actually requires only a pull test for sport flying to make sure your control system is ok (which means that you have the AMA insurance coverage). A pull test and regulation line sizes are called for in AMA competition.

Twin Fox .35 take .018
.46 and up. 018
.35-40 .015
.19 and under .012
1/2a .008

For AMA competition, a .19 cu. in. engine requires .015 multistrand lines.
