Hi Guys,
What would be the best 40 sized four
stroke to use on a 40 sized profile.
One that could be used right out of the
box with lest amount of fuss.

Thanks

Saito 40 seems to be the "headliner." I have flown the Saito 30 and flown my Saito 72 for many years. I have also extensively tested the Saito 56. All good motors.

The OS 40 Surpass is a nice motor also.If the price was the same I would probably go for the Saito also. But dont worry about the OS as a option,it works great also.

Bob,

I have a Saito 40a too, but doesn't it bother you to buy an engine with the "a" suffix already added? It's like Saito knows what it wants to do for the "b" version.

I have the Saito 30, 40 and OS40 Surpass, and the Surpass is by far the heaviest of the three, so keep that in mind.

One of our local Expert flyers (Jim Schuett) has built a Sig Twister (added ~2" to the tail a la Fancher) and put the old non-Surpass 40 on it (throttle simply wired open). Everyone who flies it says it really is a sweet setup. Certainly doesn't lack power. Just another thought since sometimes you can find the old engines for pretty cheap in Swap Meets. I bet the Saito 40(a!) would be a nice engine for it too.

Agreed, I also have a 40 Surpass but haven't put it on anything yet. The little Saito 40 is so good I bought another and may not ever get the OS on anything. I replaced a Saito 30 with the 40a on a modified Twister and it really made the plane come alive. I think it would be great in and ARF Nobler or Oriental.

Alan - I'm pretty sure that the "A" designation on the new SAITO .40 is to distinguish it from the original 40. I had one and although it was a fine R/C sport engine, the power-to-weight ratio was way too low for our use. Comparable to a 2S .29 in my opinion.
Both the SAITO .40 and the Surpass are excellent engines for C/L use. The SAITO is much more user friendly and around two ounces lighter but the Surpass is thirstier and makes noticeably more power.
Either of the new 40s, OS or SAITO work very well for C/L use. The SAITO has become quite popular in the ARF Nobler. The OS would be perfect for the profile Cardinal - in fact, we've found it to work well as a replacement for the ST .46.
And, by the way, all our flying on both engines has been with the carburator wired open.
