Double Star no more

While at the WC, I got a chance to meet and talk to John Brodak. He told me the sad news: production of Double Star engines has stopped completely. If you own a DS engine, I suggest you stock up on spare parts.

Not sure if that was all of the message, but as of today, Double Stars were still being produced and available from Tom Dixon.

In our club, we have many Double Stars being used and are in contact with the factory very often.

From what I was told, Tom is selling whatever is left of the inventory. Can this be verified?

One of our club members talked with Sergey this morning and he was still
in business then.

Will see where the mis information came from as we track this.

Is Sergei is someone at the Kharkov plant?

Kharkov is in Ukraine... Double Star is supposedly made in Moldova...

How (if at all) does any of this relate to the Brodak .40?

Brodak 40 is made in the same shop by the same people as Double Star.

could it be that John B. is just not going to sell or carry the Dbl. Stars anymore?

The word from Tom Dixon is that the Double Star line is NOT going out of production.

I think whats happening here is that the Brodak 40 production is going to be moved to a different shop, as the DS facility cannot keep pace with demand. This should be better for everybody-more Brodak motors, and continued availibility of DS motors for those who want them.

I got a voicemail from Tom last night. He called to assure me(in a funny way) that my information was incorrect. Double Stars are alive and well. Personally, I would hate to see one of the long time stunt engine developers out of business.

Tom was somewhat upset when he called. Perhaps I should have phrased my post as a question. So, Mr. Dixon, PLEASE don't sue me for a post I made on an online forum.

My rule of thumb is to contact the vendor or source of the product and make sure of the rumor before I go public. I am not surprised that Tom Dixon would be bothered by this story. And I am surprised and disappointed that John Brodak allegedly is the source of it.

It is much easier to make sure of the veracity of the information than to have to perform a mea culpa after publishing such incorrect data than can have a very detrimental impact on a small business like Tom Dixon's.

Tom does not have to do what he does, but he does it out of a passion for the sport and I for one am very appreciative of what he goes through to make Double Star engines and the rest of his product line available for all of us.

Thank you for the good suggestion Tom. I'll keep it in mind. I was hoping what I heard wasn't true. I'm glad that Tom is in business as usual.

Much like the first rumour on this thread that got all the hub-bub going, if the bit about Double stars going out was wrong, what makes anyone think that John Brodak saying they were going out was wrong?

Maybe just stick this whole thing in the RUMOUR CONTROL section of our brains and move on.

By the way, Tower is no longer going to produce any ARF's for RC or CL, rather all manufacturing is going to be concentrated on FF aircraft, the only TRUE form of Aeromodeling.

Just got off the phone with Tower, your info is incorrect. Also, they will sue you for your inaccurate statements.

I was at Muncie for the world championships. John Brodak told me that the future Brodak .40's would probably be made in China, because the Chinese can manufacture it cheaper.

I also saw the new Brodak ARF Cardinal and Oriental. They are excellent! The wing and Fuselage of the Oriental are keyed together to give you perfect alignment, and both models have an adjustable wing tip weight box and adjustable leadouts.

It's nice to know that no one cares about a made in the USA product anymore!!! We can't even get our engines made hear..gezzz!

Sure you can, we have Fox, PA, ROJett, Cox, various RJL engines (and I apologize if I left some other US companies out).

It's a world economy Tim, adapt, overcome and excel.

Alan is correct, the best engines are made in the good old USA in the form of PA and Ro-Jett to name two.

I am glad to hear that the DS61re will continue to be produced. It has become my favorite engine for a few years now. Very reliable and trouble free. May all fly Double Stars, but if not just continue to have tons of fun... BAD ANDY

Scott, Be careful of Andy's setups-where he comes from they run motors on moonshine! When not flying models they are racing stock cars on the local dirt tracks. Its good training for evading the treasury guys......

I'd actually not mind hearing that setup stuff myself. It sounds like a nice running setup every time I've seen that Avanti fly. Glad to see you at the contests again Bad!

My setup is no secret and it is very simple which is the great thing about it. After trying different venturis I have always found that the stock venturi and spraybar cant be beat. I have found that 3 headshims can be used at every contest I have attended from Brodaks to the King Orange in Fl. The exhaust nipple on the muffler was opened up ever so slightly. I use 10% S&W fuel with 50-50 blend and a sig #3 plug. I use 4.25 -4.5 oz of fuel. My favorite prop that I have found is the Bolly 12.75x8 3 blade and at a 5.4 laptime. Now for the other questions asked and emailed (this is like NASCAR)boxer briefs, brunettes,Madonna,ABSOLUTE VODKA (its my secret additive-dont tell anyone),good friend, and flying a perfect pattern..
