I wrote AMA competitions, Steve Kaluf, about this and this is what he wrote back: "Hi Tom, actually we too were disapointed with what the local and state press did as well. We ran more than 75 radio spots, ads in the papers, and press releases/packs to all network TV and so on. However, it still seems that aeromodeling is just not big news even at this level in the US. Dave Brown and I have already talked about this and hope to work to try and figure out why this constantly happens. On a positive note Discovery Channel was here and shot for their Monster Nation program. Hopefully this will once again raise a level of awareness." Steve Kaluf, Technical Director

So, all of you that have denigrated AMA about this need to think of a way to make amends and then get out there and raise awareness as a lot of clubs do about CL aviation. Here in Northern VA, NVCL constantly is involved in community outreach with schools, churches, government and civic groups, local media and the National Air and Space Museum, Udvar-Hazy, at Dulles. We have put on two static and one flight demo at the Udvar-Hazy with more to follow. We have handed out hundreds of parent's guides and have zip, zero, nada to show for it. Most of our new membership comes from recycled Baby Boomers. We have done this to the detriment of the enjoyment of our flying.

So, AMA is not to blame, and I wish I knew the answer to state of affairs as they exist now.

It's hard to imagine anyone in Muncie who isn't pretty jaded
about model planes by now.
(which argues for taking the Nats back on the road).

Do signs advertising in town help them?
If so, they can put them up.

If that is the only thing AMA messed up on, I give them that. I have visited the Headquarters twice and to be honest the facility is out quite a ways from the city in the SE corner. Putting a sign up at the entrance could possibly be a waste of $$$$$.

I was, and there were indeed signs, also the scrolling message. You must have missed them.

Are you talking about the scrolling sign that is 100 yards past the entrance to AMA headquarters? You don't see that if you are casually driving by.

If there were any signs on the main streets or highways leading into Muncie, neither I or anyone I talked to saw them. It was a subject of discussion during the world's.

100 yards in which direction? If it was to the west, that would have been a good place, since that was where the turn-off was from the bypass.

How about 100 yards down the road that enters the AMA site? That is the only sign that mentioned the world's championships. You can't see it unless you are already down the entry road.

If there was another sign in Muncie regarding the world champs, neither I or several others could see it.
