What can you tell me about the cox .049 black widow engine?

The fuel tank looks larger than other 049 engines. Anything else different, power, rpm, piston rings, etc?

How long will it run on a tank of fuel?

With two ports, it was (and is) a very capable performer. Use the hi comp head, too.

Running time? I don't know: maybe 3 minutes?

Gary,

Depending on the tank tube bore it should get between 2 and 3 minutes of run time. Like alot of Cox stuff there was alot of mixing and matching going on. I had anodized one fellows Black Widow a while back that was all plain aluminum and had a TD cylinder on it from the factory. A good Widow can pull 18,000rpm, 20,000 with some more work i.e. venturi bore, lightened piston and crank and good fitting parts on a 5x3 on the ground.

I think I have said all I know on this forum. Do searches on Cox, C*x, Black Widow, Hyper Viper, Venom and Killer Bee. You will find out all there is to know (that I know of, anyway).

One thing for sure, the hotter they get, the more fuel they use, and then some!

Carefull fitting is the simplest and safest "hop up". And the safest way to do that is to mix and match parts from several engines to get one exceptional one.

Piston rings?

>Piston rings?

C*X 049s are precision lapped engines which rely on the precise fit between the piston and cylinder bore for compression. They don't use rings.

Towers web site says the newer style black widows. "The ones with the small vent in the top of the backplate" are not for stunting. I say ditch cox. Norvel's are far superior

Why don't you just get over the fact that you don't work there anymore and spell it like it is? Its not like you are proving a point or effecting their sales. Looks like people keep buying their products regardless of your aversion to spelling it correctly or not. Besides, you spelled it right on reply #4. See, it wasn't so hard. Nursing a bad happening like this can only lead to you becoming a bitter old man. Do this over and over COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX COX.......... It will be therapeutic for you.

When you look at how much money that company brings in I really don't think that your childish mis-spelling of their name bothers them at all. Whenever there is a parting of the ways in a employer/employee relationship there is always mitigating circumstances. All we have is your side of it. Would love to hear theirs. Bill,

Gees man lighten up alittle! Live is too short to get all flush because some dude spells C*x like that. I mean I love C*x engines myself and what do I care if someone, in this case a very smart man wants to spell it C*x. Nursing a problem with a guy that wants to spell it C*x can only lead YOU to becoming a bitter old man;)

Actually all you guys know is that I am p.o.ed at them over how I was terminated. I have never published the details, and won't. Those who know me personally will probably trust my judgment in the matter.

C*x it is!

Enough on this subject, already!

Except for the Close out AME motor Norvel does not have any .049's in their online catalog. Last time I looked they were selling the "bad box" .049 for $27.00. Sure wish I got a few. Anyone know what's going on over there at Norvel?

Sorry but when I see a whole bunch of people spelling it the way he does without knowing the whole story that is just plain dumb. Always 2 sides to every story.

Bill,
Remember, there is never any detail too small that we can't work up into a firestorm on the Internet!

It's probably worth a PhD dissertation or two to explain this effect.

I agree wholeheartedly! I am not trying to do that. Its just that when I look at how long COX has been in business and all the different planes they have produced over the years trying to keep our hobby alive it seems disrespectful to treat them this way on one guys say so. They have kept the business here in the USA along with the jobs. I will also agree that their engines aren't what they used to be either. However I remember how much excitement there was a short time back on this forum over their new Hyper Viper. I can't think of anyone else that has generated that kind of responce in a long time. Then ONE guy gets terminated and everyone is down on them and thinks they are just terrible. We are going to mis-spell the name too because thats what he does?

Sorry, Bill, but almost all C*x product comes from China now, including the Hyper Viper. Look at the boxes!

That "one guy" designed A LOT of C*x products and planes that made significant impacts on young modellers. There were noticable decline in C*x plane product line and quality since his departure.

All my C*x products (except Tee Dee and Conquest)were created/designed by Larry.

C*x it is!

BTW Black Widow and the famous Venom engine are his design/creation.

I for one will always spell COX the proper way, if for no other reason than out of RESPECT for the terrific individual who has literally been responsible for a life time of fun modeling for me ..... I am talking about none other than the great Leroy Cox! Those who are down on the Estes take-over why not get down on Estes, not Cox and it's once very proud traditiion that Leroy worked his tail off in obtaining?

The Black Widow is nothing more than a GOLDEN BEE with a double ported #1 cylinder, the Venom nothing more than a Black Widow / Golden Bee with a Killer Crank and Tee Dee top end ..... I do believe the Golden Bee hit the market way back in 1958, and the Tee Dee in 1961? Back in Leroy's day "L&M COX" was nothing short of utter Amazing and Incredible achievement, the fantastic stuff they continually developed and marketed, year in and year out! Leroy Cox dared to be great, he certainly did obtain that status and much more ..... Leroy Cox will always be My Hero ..... hurray for COX!!!!!!

I once knew what "L&M", of "L&M Cox" stood for but presently I can not remember .... who can tell me, I think "L" was for Leroy and the "M" I forget?

IIRC, it is "L.M. Cox Manufacturing", not "L.& M. Cox" I always thought that the M was his middle initial.

I enjoy Cox engines, both old and new. I have no beef with Cox/Estes. I do however, respect Larry's right to misspell it because he does have a beef with them. How 'bout *ox or Co*? Guess those would be misspelled misspellings, huh?

You are correct .... I think I might have been sub-consciously thinking of the old "L&M" Cigarette ads? I wonder is that particular cigarette still on the market ..... I do remember the many tobacco ads on the old B&W television programs.
