This is not in any particular order. Five guys from each of four circles advanced to the top 20:

Yuriy Yatsenko
Curt Contrata
Kaz Minato

I don't have the Advanced results, but the Advanced top 20 includes John D'Ottavio, age 82.

GO IGOR!!!!!

Ted didn't make it? Sounds like the crash of his plane took him out of the running. That's too bad...

Don't give up on Ted yet, I only count 19 names.
GO JOHN D!!!

Sorry. I missed Bob Whitely's name.

I just had breakfast with Ted. He's talking about golf. It's sad.

Howard,

For those of us who are out of the loop, what happened to Ted's plane? I am sure there are many lurkers who would like to know the story as well.............T.Durrill

Followup.....Brett Buck posted the following on Ted's mishap:

>Uncle Jimby told me that Ted did in fact take a back-up with
>him to the Worlds Event so he's not out of the running for
>the NATs.

Ted chose not to fly it. The new model crashed due to some uncertain failure during a vertical 8 in a moderately strong wind. I was looking right at it when it crashed, and it looked like a classic line/leadout failure from the outside. Got close to the bottom, and then it "bunted" hard outside and went in. Subsequent examination showed controls to be intact, so best guess is a lower spar failure driving the controls hard over "down".

Good to see my 2nd father, coach & mentor.. John D'Ottavio mentioned.. We can't keep up to John.. at 82 he is really less than 50!

The August 2004 issue of Model Aviation will have John's Classic "Jerseyan" featured.

John has been flying the "Silencer" for the last 10 or 12 years. He is on his second and has a third under construction. This will be a Blue Sky Models kit in the future.

He mentioned in another post that he was able to borrow a plane
from a friend, a plane that Igor had actually built and the
friend had brought to fly in the World Champs. Pretty cool,
I thought.

Yes, it's Richi Kornmeier's backup plane.
Designed and built by Igor, it's his MAX, but powered with
an ST 60.

And the ST .60 gave him some excitement in the wind.

Igor Burger · Jul 16, 2004 10:39 PM

Yes, that was Richie's ST 60 powered MAX, terrible accelerating in wind and terrible slow in calm, and combined with my 3 days experience with ST 60 after years of piped models I know what is pipe for

Alexander has the same model with piped Jett .50 and he had clearly better flying in wind and also in calm.

Unfortunatelly I was not allowed to register it immediatelly after crash. The model was available but jury did not allow me late registration after start of the contest, so after 11 place after first round of WC qualification I falled down to 26th place after the second which I did not fly due to crashed model.

Just to add a couple of comments here, Matt had the "opportunity" to fly either before or after Igor a couple of times, and I actually was able to watch all Igor's flights, including those on top 20 day. I can tell you now that Igor did a very excellent job of flying, especially considering he was doing so with a plane/engine combo that he was not familiar with. We even had a running joke going with this because he seemed to get the same score each time he flew (Like, "If you were just going to get the same score, Igor, why did you even both to put up the second flight?")

Also, since Alexander was ready to trash his plane after the contest to liberate the hardware, feeling it was too expensive to ship the entire plane back home, we did a little negotiating and I now have it in my possession (still intact, but minus the power plant). It will be interesting to see how this plane flies in comparison to what we have been using. Fortunately it was a take apart plane, so it was able to fit in the front seat of Matt's car for the trip back home.

>>>Igor, why did you even both to put up the second flight?<<<

Len, now, after long flight home I already know the ansver, I did it just to be sure that I make every time at every judging board at any conditions the same score

I will ask here for certificate for 530 points and the next NAT I will do corespondently. I not need to flight over Atlantic, I not need to build take apart model, I not need to ship box, I not need to risk flying with one model only, I will just send the certificat and Shareen will send me back results

... hmmm ... I will miss all those people I met there, but now I know also faces and we can speak here ...

BTW thanx for forum

This is surprising me - here are results. Beside Henk from Netherland, there are 2 non US flyers from Ukraine, 2 from Slovakia and 2 from Japan. All pairs from every country are always together - Ukraine place 7 & 8; Japan 10 & 11 and Slovakia 12 & 13.

RE: surprise#16 source
Sounds suspiciously like Formula One, doesn't it? Or at least, like F1 was two years ago.. Two Ferraris, two Williamses, two McLarens (or whoever was winning back then), two this, two that, ... two Minardis!
