Brodak Primer

News Flash.... Brodak Primer is not fuel proof. I found out the hard way. After making repairs to my Checkmate. The whole nose section from the leading edge of the wing forward was covered in primer awaiting paint. Well Saturdays weather was as good as it gets so I decide to go flying, thinking that I'll just wipe her down with Prepsol after flying and finish painting this week. Well the ten percent Powermaster fuel turned the primer into goo and now I'll have to strip the whole nose section again and refinish. (We're not called Circle Jerks for nothing.) I just wanted to pass this along so no one else makes the same stupid mistake. This is in no way, a negitive post about Brodak primer!!!!!!! The stuff works great and I will continue using it.

I do not use Brodak Primer. Rather I use nitrate clear for base coats on balsa, nitrate for applying paper then nitrate with zinc stearate, then polar gray for primer. I had the same problem. I also had a problem with silver not attaching very well to the undercoats.

Interesting as well. I use Randolphs dope from aircraft spruce interchangeably with brodak dope. Acrylic lacquers. And I use PPG acrylic lacquer thinner and ppg metallics added to dopes and no problems.

I've used silver powder mixed with butyrate clear as filler for at least 4 full-size planes I have covered (with Dacron). Too much silver in the dope and it doesn't adhere well. I think the Brodak silver dope needs to be mixed with equal parts clear for better adhesion.

It really needs a lot of thinner to work well.

Sad to hear that you have problems with such a great plane as the Checkmate. It makes sense that the primer would not be fuel proof.
If it were, it would probably have lower density and a higher shrink rate.
