Prop Pitch

I have been pondering a thought about prop pitch when flying at my altitude of 5500ft. With the air being much thinner, is the same prop less effective than, say at sea level?
Probably not an important thing, but the theory has me thinking and I need some more thinkers, please.

You need more pitch for the higher (in eleevation) density altitude.
and the higher you go the more you need. At 5500 feet or roughly a mile high I would be getting close to 5" pitch probably with a pipe engine. You can also add nitro to your fuel to help bring performance back to an acceptable level too. That's what the west coast wing of PAMPA flyers do when attending the Nats. However 5500 feet would call for more pitch on the prop as well.

When I lived in Idaho---about 3500 feet and hot, hot, hot at what felt like 2% humidity---we used to go up in venturi size quite a lot and add a bit in prop pitch and nitro. Say from a 4 pitch to a 4.5 pitch and from 5% to 10% or even as high as 15% nitro. This pretty much did it. When we came to Seattle or Oregon for contests at sea level, we would go down in pitch on the prop, but usually left everything else alone since it was working. The performance at sea level was, ah, pretty good.

I find that my settup works about the same everywhere. I may add some nitro or take some away to get the power I want. In all of my years of flying in many many states and once in another country I have never not been able to fly the same.
