Came accross a Fox .50 that is set up for control line. The engine has very good compression and runs very well on the test stand. Does any one know much about this engine, and would it be worth trying on a large stunt model?

So info on the Fox 50 as I heard it. The 50 was an engine that really wasn't supposed to exist but came about as a result of a mixup in the manufacture of P/L for the 46. Since they were oversize Duke didn't waste them and made the 50 a reality.
To the point I used 2 of these as RC motors and they were really powerhouses. Good starters and great idle and power to spare. Really some of the best Foxes that I ever ran. I musn't be in the minority as that motor is still well thought of and readily bought whenever one in decent shape is offered.
As to it's use as a stunt motor I believe that it could be a real powerhouse but it might be a bear to tame and make it useable. However there are probably some knowligable people who will be able to give you more info then me.

I have one of the R/C versions myself, but have only flown it on a plane that had serious vibration problems causing fuel foaming and engine shut-down in the air. I did aid another flyer who had some problems setting one up. Since most of the Engine Gurus in this club are Fox Bashers, he asked me for assistance. I richened up the high speed needle a bit, then did what Pete Chin recommended. I adjusted the idle first to about 2100 Then set the top end. We thought 13400 was very good for the top end. When he landed, found out he was using an 11-7.5 prop. A lot of the imported .60s at our field won't turn that size prop at that speed. Definetly a powerhouse. Later some friends in florida retuned the engine to about 14000 on the same prop, after it got broken in a bit.
Excuse my refering to R/C nere, but I am in a local R/C Club, in a local CL club, and in a local Flying Aces based FF club. Can't wait to retire and have time to do some serious flying. Almost forgot, seems to me Fox has a CL venturi and needle assembly available for all their .45 and up engines to convert from R/C.

If you want the Fox .50 to be modified for stunt, send it to Lew Woolard. He does excellent work.
