Oriental prime time

The only set back is I keep having bubbles in the fillets. I have sanded and painted at least 4 or 5 times. It's getting there. Look close at the fillets and you can make it out. I will send more photo's on my progress.

What did ou make your fillets out of?

Gtreat Planes Pro wood glue and micro balloons. I did the sma way on my Cardinal and had no problems. The Cardinal turned out great. Using Silver for the primmer on the Cardinal, and White paint with a little black for the Oriental. All Brodak Paints. I have great weather painting the Oriental. Any suggestions?

I have found that it does not matter what you use for fillets. The problem is if you load the fillets up with paint you will release the previouse coats and they will bubble. It is hard not to do this because when you try to get an even coat of paint it just builds up in that little area. The best thing you can do is try to keep the paint as light as possible around the fillets.

Sometimes I will have a plane complete and when I put the clear on I get a lttle heavy handed and run into this same problem.

I agree with Derek, don't load up the paint over fillets.

If they keep bubbling using dope go to auto primer. Sand paint off of fillets then shoot 2 coats lightly sanding after each coat. Auto primer is heavy so just spray the fillets. After auto primer go back and shoot a light coat of polar gray.

So if I sand the area just enough to show high and low spots could I then add say a small amount of HobbyLite to fill in uneven spots. Then I quess I should use my airbrush and apply one light coat at a time, only on the fillets. How long should I let dry between coats. One Hr, over night, a week, a month, a year, or let it hang on the wall to display.

I would not recommened using Hobbylite on fillets.

On the imfo. you have given I would sand the high spots down. I use a tool made of 1/4" dowel 2" long with a 1/4" balsa handel glued to it (2"x1" balsa). Rap sand paper around it.

If you are using dope spray 1 light coat a day. 3 or 4 light coats.

The worst thing if you can not get paint to stick is you may have to grind your fillets out and start over.

I've had good luck with 30 minute epoxy & micro Balloons.

Keep working on it, you will get it finished.

Orientals are a great flying Classic plane. I'm currently building my 3rd one.

I think that between Dad and myself we have built 8-10 Orientals. Great planes,very fun to fly! I had the pleasure of meeting Dee Rice at the nats this year. He is a great guy, I enjoyed talking to him about the Oriental and all of its new variations.
