I received a brand new in box 40th Anniversary Fox 35 Stunt with muffler from my son for my birthday.

( I think it was manufactured in 1996?)
Being a Johnson/Veco Fan in the 50s-60s and an ST fan in the 70's, I never owned a Fox except for the 36Xs. I've had a few used ones and never been too impressed with them..no idea how old they were or how worn-out. So..I at least know the reputation of Fox and I know this engine is new.
I plan putting it on a mid-sized,40-44" wing span, profile type plane. Streak, Galaxy etc. How many tankfulls should I run on the bench? What prop? What % nitro/castor?
I have a feeling all this has been asked before , but one more time please as I want the engine to be as good as a Fox gets!
Thanks,
Norm

Norm:
Foxes seem to like LOTS and LOTS of break in! 1/2 gallon minumum, 29% castor.

The Galaxy was a fine match, I believe.

Hi Norm. Here's how I have done it in the past and present on my many Foxes. Lot more info will come on this forum and I believe the concensus will be: 10% nitro, 25 to 29% castor. NO synthetic oil during breakin. 9X5 or 9X4 prop. No load, just rpms here. 2 minute runs, cool to touch on the cylinder head before next 2 minute run. Run it in a four cycle, not slobbering, run. After about 10 minutes of run time, pinch the fuel line so it picks up rpm for a short burst 2 to 5 seconds, release the fuel line. After 30 minutes total run time, let it run in a rich 2 stroke for 5 minutes. Put it in a plane and fly three tank fulls through it in mild climbs and dives or roller coaster flight. Then fly the heck out of it like any other stunt engine. I usually launch at 9,200 to 9,300 rpm or just below the break point, which I find by tilting the planes nose up to about 45 degrees and back to level. If it goes to a two stroke and back, then that is my launch point. Others will and do do it differnt, but not that much. This is written on line, not in blood nor in stone, FWIW. Ty M.
edit. 30 minutes on the bench is close to 50 oz of fuel, which is close to one half gallon. More precise info is what he needs. Not ten or so words.

For break-in, I've always kept the oil at 29% castor. Once it is well broken-in, I like a 50/50 mix of Powermaster 2/29 and 10/22. Bigiron suggested the mild boost in nitro and slight reduction of oil (as low as 25%) with some synthetic. It works!

Been using the blend for a long time now. Works great! I wouldn't go to a 50/50 castor/synthetic blend, though. By all means it should be mostly castor....in this case at least 75%. The small amount of synthetic does help control the gummy buildups.

after break in, make sure you use plenty of nitro, the nitro lets the motor breath and makes the fox real happy. We use Sig 10/25 ALL castor and add castor to the fuel, this lowers the nitro a little but it is better than 5%

talk to larry foster, lew woolard, don mcclain, i think dirtydan is running a fox, ask them what they are doing.

you probably don't want to hear this but sending it to larry foster will make it REAL happy!!

hope that helps,
Aaron

I used a small shaft Johnson on my Galaxy. It was one of my favorite combos. I have taken to lapping my Fox's before running, but this is a job only for the very experienced. It does make a big difference. I never use fuel with synthetic oil. I like Sig champion with 5% nitro and either 20% or 25% straight castor. Foxs don't like to run right when they are tight. It takes at least an hour of time before you can expect it to run any way near right, but not necessarally all bench time. Make sure to avoid lean runs especially when not fully loosened up.

I have a 40th Anniversary Fox .35 that was customized by George Aldrich. Here is the note that he enclosed with the engine:

"Gary -

Weather finally broke! It runs fine - just needs some rich flights to run it in.

Fox plugs suck! Try R/C long from Hobby Shack - Thunder Bolt is name - At least 25% castor in the fuel. Thanx, George"

There was no recommentation on nitro or prop size. The invoice($41.50) is for a "Fox Custom MT & Test Run." Gary

Yes, I was running a Fox 35 in my Classic airplane, an Oriental. And the Fox was set up by Larry Foster who did an excellent job on it, including fitting one of Randy's High Zoot cranks.

Unfortunately, I rubbed its nose against asphalt rather vigorously, pretty much ruining the motor. Especially distressing as I had finally become used to having a Fox 35 which wouldn't spit out broken cranks, yet I still managed to find a way to break the shaft.

Some will gasp, but I was happy with fuel of 20% nitro, 25% castor, 3% Klotz, balance methanol. Fuel mileage was not very good, but that was expected with this blend. And Don thought the break was just (place your fingers closely together) a bit early and a bit stronger than he likes, although I thought it was real good.

I remmber Steve Wooley saying he ran as much as 25% nitro in his Foxes, so the 20% doesn't sound crazy.
In fact, as you already know Dan, Larry F. recommends running 15% in his Foxes and it helps cooling in the thin case Fox.

I've had good luck with the Fox Gold Std plugs but it seems like a few of them "suddenly" go cold. K&B 1-L's seem to be a bit hotter and are very consistent.

Dont forget the thread on the possible wrist pin/keeper problem with this batch of motors.
