When you go to the user menu at the top of the forum and then click on "edit your profile" there it tells you--48 x 48. This is the location for adding an avatar to your profile anyway. Larger pictures can be used, but they will be shrunk to 48 x 48, and the only way to do that to a jpeg is to remove pixels. The more detailed a picture is, the less detail will be visible in the avatar. That is why it is best to keep them simple.

It's too bad above picture does not look good as an avatar. It does portray how I feel sometimes.

You do realize that any addition or change of an avatar is a fluid change. It not only will show here, but on every other post you have ever made on the forum in the past.
