I have a K&B 29R available. It's a "first edition" - no R on the case or crank, but it is indded an 29R - turns up the saem as my other two 29Rs.

Is vintage speed an actual event being set up in the U.S.? I believe such an event does exist elsewhere in the world.

Thanks,

RE: engine wanted for vintage speed#3 source
A couple of years ago on the speed forum I inquired if any interest in vintage speed. I did get some positive input, plus a lot on negative. Big thing is current use of 10% nitro and large line dia. requirements. I saved a Harter's B pan and a mess of basswood in case it ever took root. Even have a beautiful set of medal wings to go with it. Monoline made alot of speed flyers leave the sport. Cheers,Dan

Tom,
You might try emailing Ian Russell of Rustler/Merco at [email protected]. He has a huge collection, and was looking to sell part of it the last time I talked with him about a year ago. The K&B's and McCoy .60 are likely possibilities. Do you plan to fly these planes, or build them for collection/display?

Dankar,
Monoline and pipes, even though Wisniewski (who is back competing at Whittier Narrows by the way) was smart, saw the handwriting on the wall, and passed out a detailed article and drawings on how to build/use the pipe at the first World Champs where he obsoleted the world's speed equipment in one sweep. The pipe had its effect anyway.

I'm OK with 10% nitro and large diameter lines. What I would like to see is an event with a rotation rate more in keeping with the geriatric c/l population, who depend increasingly on a few proxy pilots. Just ONE nice 110-120 mph event (on 60' lines) would bring some out of retirement, and maybe bring a few newcomers in. There are a dozen speed events. Do they all really have to have high rotation rates? The response to this suggestion on the Delphi speed board was almost violently negative. Unlike racing, which has a short rules cycle and works hard to make changes likely to increase participation, speed basically gives the world the finger. Enough soap box....

One thing about holding onto the pan and basswood in case something catches on, is that someone has to go first. Build a plane, take it to a contest. If it's legal per current AMA rules, then it can be flown officially. Even if it's not competetive with current equipment, you get official flights and exposure to your idea. And if not AMA-legal, then demo flights are cool too. (I'm talking to myself here as well---not setting myself up as an example). Eventually we have to actually take time and build a Vintage or other new event plane and show up at a contest.

Cheers,
Kim Mortimore

Kim,
Point well taken taken about building a B-speed ship and flying it even as a demo or official. Cheers,Dan

If they ever revive two-line, non-piped, unlimited fuel Speed (in other words, 1950s-style), let me know. I've a couple of Doolings that could stand a workout.

Prior to the move back to AZ, sold a NIB McCoy RR 29 and nicely refurbushed (Blackburn) McCoy 60 Series 20, thinking there'd never be any need for either.

Now wish I'd kept them . . .

Mikey,
How about we talk about vintage speed. Like you say two line non piped, unlimited fuel. Only thing is going with line size requirements for AMA. Or at least pull test, etc. Plus baffeled cross flow engines only. Low tec speed. No Nelson's/Jett/ etc. It could go along with B-Team race. OTS and Classic stunt was a dream come through. Maybe a late fall demo for both to wet the desire.

Cheers,Dan.

##### Razor's/ Debolt Speedwagon's. Just to name a few. Tom Wilk has CD's on all of these.

Line sizes have increased as engine powers have increased. Any chance the AMA could approve "vintage" line sizes for vintage engines?

Ian,
Very good question. I am querying those in a position to know.

Tom,
I will forward your engine list to a local collector I know who has an impressive collection of classic speed engines, NIB.

Just a pipe dream, - can we imagine e.g. a week long Vintage and Classic Nats? C/L Speed, Stunt, and T/R? Has Combat been in existence long enough to be Vintage? Certainly Classic a.o.k. Sounds like heaven to me.....

Ian,
Yes, indeedy, combat has been in existence long enough. In fact, Vintage Diesel Combat is actually flown at the Northwest Regionals, which will happen Saturday, May 27 at 9:00 AM at the Eugene Oregon airport. I kid you not!

Where are you going to get these cross flow bafled piston engines and
Where are you going to get parts
Mccoy are $100's of dollars and Dooling are $1000
A Nelson or Jett is only $350 and you can make a phone call and get parts tomorrow
There are several 2 line events right now one in 21 sport speed
Tons of car engines that are available
Stop typing and start flying

RE: engine wanted for vintage speed#14 source
Fred,
I don't agree with your prices on older engines. My Dooling cost me $110.00 and I had a McCoy .29R BB that purchased at Meca collecto for $95.00. Frank Bowman can ring these and replace bearings. Even McCoy .60's can be bought for Less than a Nelson Combat special. The Dooling .61's are hi priced. McCoy .60's generally out ran them anyway. There is interest in vintage speed and Status Quo fights it in speed. Yes there are alot of current speed events , but all use hi-zoot mega buck engines. There are tons of ST G .21 .29's out there. I sold a new one for $85.00 and it took awhile to sell it.
Just like classic stunt I hear same old ##### about no supply of cross flow engines. You can get OS Max .40H's all day long. Enya .35's/ OS max .35S/ Enya #6001 .45's / K&B .35 G/H etc. Go to any collecto and there are tables of them. Yankee trading and you can have these with little effort. There are thousands of engines out there. Speed flyers are some of nicest people going. Look what VSC did for stunt. Something to ponder . Cheers,Dan

RE: engine wanted for vintage speed#13 source
Whoa Kim, I don't know anyone involved in speed flying today who is violently negative to anything that would increase participation or encourage new flyers. As for introducing new events I believe those who are amoung the ruling body feel that there are already enough classes without introducing new ones. There are, in fact several two line events that are very popular and will test one's skills. Speed is speed and has always been an effort to fly faster. Attaining speed with vitamin "N" is a thing of the past with the 10% rule. Speeds today must be obtained mechanically with better engines and more engine knowlege. There are a number of folks today who would like to see class "C" reborn with a max engine size 40. Would be a heck of a class, but there again there are already eight speed classes and most feel that is enough unless the number of flyers in the events warrant another class.
