For trade: Snow Bird pitot tube for .40 - .50 stunt motor.

I have a pitot tube from one of the Tutor jets the Canadian Snow Birds fly. I unfortunately can not prove this other than to give you my word. I lived in Moose Jaw (where the Snow Birds are/were based) for many years and one of my friends was mechanic for them. It was he that gave it to me. Its about 15" long and 1 1/2" thick. I can, if you wish, scan it and send pics. I was always going to polish it, make a nice oak base and put it on my desk, but I never seem to have the room on a desk. I do not need a brand new motor...just a good runner without too many miles on it.

What is a pitot tube? I would like to see a picture. I have nothing to trade just wanting to learn.

It is a tube that sticks out in a forward direction in clean air and is used to feed the air speed indicator.

A more technical explanation would be:
A tube with two ports. One is for ram air pressure, and faces forward directly into the airstream. The other port is perpendicular to the flow, and measures static air pressure. For an aircraft, these two pressure are attached to an air speed indicator. The faster the aircraft flies, the greater the differential pressure between the two ports, and the greater the deflection on the airspeed indicator.
Pitot tubes are also used to measure the flow inside a pipes or air ducts.

Glen sent me this picture for posting. It shows the top side. I have made the picture smaller so it will fit fairly well on the screen, but if you look closely, this is a top view, and in about the center you will see four holes which are the static holes mentioned above. These measure the static air pressure, as if at rest. The ram air hole is to the right and this would be pointed forward in clean air so one can measure air speed.

A pitot tube is a sharp pointed piece of metal tubing that sticks out and pokes you in the eye during visual preflight inspection and birds love to land on it.

Also, spiders make their nests inside or bugs fly in and suddenly your air speed drops to zero.

Just leave the heat on, that'll take care of the bugs. How many of you jet jocks every burnt up a tube cover???
