I know fellows, this is a tough one!

I need two NEW connecting rods for the OS S30/35. My recent LNIB eBay purchase had a worn rod. I prefer the RPM bushed type, but I will buy the original NEW O.S. part. I have already bought one used rod that had too much wear, and I don't want to go there again.

I have NO contact information for the "RPM" company?

I have also been told that the Super Tigre C 35 con-rod will work if the hole(s) are enlarged. This may be the solution.

Thanks fellows, JimA

Jim:

Contact Fred Carnes at [email protected]

He knows the location of Mr. Richardson, and may even have an RPM rod that he would sell. I know that Mr. Richardson recently made another run of these units.

Regards,
Bruce

Good Morning, Bruce!

Fantastic! Thank you for the information. If I can find the rods, I'll have two good runners.

Congrats to you! That was quite an auction last night... You made a good buy!

Good Luck, Bruce! Regards, JimA

Hey Jim!,

How's the rod hunt going??...I have a similar situation with a handful of old Max-S motors. Trying to decide to continue with them or sell 'em off to a braver soul.

"The 'Bay" has been about 50/50 for me on aquisitions. There are a lot of abused motors out there..two recently showed up butchered with a rotory wire brush clean up job!! Scored to death !!.... Heart Breaking to see the cosmetics ruined!...
but an ugly motor can still be good runner..just need to hide it in a cowl!

At anyrate! Have you found a source? I could use maybe one or two! Please "E" me.

Nitro Fumes!......Hib

Hello Hib!

I am still awaiting a reply from RPM on the con-rods. However, I did find out that the price is $30.00! ...that's per piece, not by the dozen!

I am also working on another possible solution to this con-rod supply problem for the 35S engines.

My eBay experiences have been running about 50/50 also. Asking questions before hand has helped avoiding heartache with the auctions. I am fast approaching the point that my eBay purchases will be limited to NIB or LNIB engines. The rest is a gamble! On an 40FP 'bargain' that I acquired recently, I had to replace the wrist pin, con-rod and crank with Tower 40 parts. Luckily, the engine has great compression. The new parts cost pushes the overall cost up into the NIB or LNIB price ranges!

My non-scientific approach to testing for Max 35S connecting rod lash is to insert a Q-Tip or Popsicle stick into the exhaust port to hold the piston stationary at mid-stroke. I then gently rock a 10-inch prop back and forth, keeping the piston stationary. If the tip of the prop moves more than 3/8s-inch, then I believe the con-rod needs replacing (assuming the wrist pin is okay). All of these engines have lash at TDC and BDC, so the measurement I take is at half stroke, or so. I have not yet gone in and measured the amount of con-rod wear this translates to with a micrometer, but I will soon.

When I suggested to an eBay seller to do this test, his indignant response was that, "All OS engines have lash!" I beg to differ... I have two very old 35S engines that have zero lash when tested in this manner.

With a little luck, we may both be flying these Max S35s with new con-rods. I will definitely keep you informed, Hib.

Have a great weekend! Regards, JimA

Jim!,

Thanks for the super quick reply!!

My new 'Bay motor philosophy is NIB or LNIB too. I think most of the used Fox 35s from there ...are either cooked or not broken in!... again!..50/50.

I talked to "Big Art" himself in Dec. or so about motors in general...on the Max-S "rod problem" he said the situation isn't "soft rods" but excessive crank end play. His solution is
to add a button (I assume teflon) to the crank end (ala MCCoys??).

Makes sense to me ... I think his run out on cranks was .010"
but, I'd have to confirm that in notes...(filed... somewhere)!!

More grist for "the mill".... pun intended!

We may want to move this thread over to "Discussions" as the parts logistics get hopefully resolved....let's keep in touch on these points and see who has more to add!!!!

Fumes! and thanks again!!!..Hib
