Bill,

I just won some McCoy 40 parts on ebay. I'll check when they arrive and let you know.

Hi John
Didn't realize that was you I was bidding against!
I appreciate it, one set of piston, rod, and wrist pin would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Bill

Hey Bill,

I wondered if my last bid would stick. I wanted the shiny case 40. I am trying to build a complete set of red heads. Don't know why the McCoys get such a bad rap in control line circles. No pun intended. Be glad to share, if the 40 is in good shape.

By the way, Burnis Ray has some of the gaskets [email protected]. He may have other parts.

McCoy Redheads get a bad rap bacause they wear out mighty quick. One or two lean runs and they are fried to a crisp. I bought a McCoy Lighting Bolt .35 off Ebay that looked almost brand new, however, it evidently had been run a through a few tanks of R/C fuel or a lean run or two. It has about 1/3 the compression it should have and leaks compression abound the piston badly. I have never seen one last any time at all.....although I own 3 early Redhead .35's, 1 Lighting Bolt .35, 1 new Redhead .29 and a new Redhead .19, I do not regard them very highly......T.Durrill

Hi T.,
I know what you mean! However, I do have a few that have just never seemed to wear out. Of course, I always ran 28-29% oil, and launched in a 4 cycle. I have a hand me down from my buddy's Dad that taught me to fly that was bought and run to death well before 1964, but I "grew the piston" and now it runs just great again!
They just need a little more tlc than some others, but they do give an outstanding stunt run and, IMHO, have more power than a Fox.
Different strokes for different folks! Ain't it great?

The main reason that I started collecting the Red Heads is because I had a 19 Red Head when I was about 13 or 14 that I flew on a Jr Flite Streak. I remember the guy at the hobby shop told me that the break-in was very important. I ran that engine on a test stand out in the back yard over and over and over. It got so I just liked to watch it run...didn't make any friends with the neighbors...finally got the plane built and flew the pants off of it. It never gave me a bit of trouble and I really didn't know what I doing, then. As opposed to I hardly know what I am doing, now. Ran it in a two cycle just like I did the Cox 049s. Later I got a TD 15 and thought I had the hot setup. With the Cox on the same plane (not exactly the same plane, but another Jr. Flite Streak), the power so much different; it wasn't nearly as much fun to fly. Right now, I got a full sized Flite Streak with a Red Head 35 on it. It starts much easier than any of the Foxes I have and the plane flies just like I remember with the 19(yeah..I can remember that far back...mostly, anyway). Anyway...that's my side of things.

By the way...How did you "grow the piston"

My "first big plane and engine" was a RH 19 and a Goldberg Shoestring when I was 12! (1963) Same story. The "Father" was flying a Goldberg Cosmic Wind w/the McCoy 35. I got hold of a nice hand made, light, kit and now the same engine is about to take flight 40 years later in another Cosmic Wind!

I put it on a pan in the oven at 450 for an hour. Let it cool and reassembled it! Compression was MUCH better. It runs fine now.
There was several threads here on "piston growing".

Hey Bill,

Well, I have to tell you that I was messed up on the base gaskets. I have all of the parts cleaned up and started to assmeble things. Guess what? The base gaskets for the 29 won't fit the 40. They sure looked "close enought" but won't work. I have been cutting base gaskets from thin gasket material up to now. Got some gaskets from Burnis Ray for the 29 and I thought they were interchangeable...they are not. If you are still interested, I have two 40 pistons. One fits loose in the cylinders I have and the other I had to beat out of a stuck cylinder. It is a very tight fit, i.e., won't go all the way into either 40 cylinder. Maybe you can make one of them work.

I was correct about the rods. The 35 and 40 use the same rods. I can let you have the two 40 pistons described above, a 35 rod and a 40 wrist pin.

If you want these parts, let me know. I will give them to you at no charge. I am still looking for a couple of the springy needle valve needles. Burnis wants $15.00 a pop, just for the needle, I can probably pick up a beater engine, or better yet a complete Super Tigre NVA for less than that.

Let me know if you want the piston(s), rod and wrist pin.

Cheers,

John Ramsey

Hi John,
Will send an email. I have a couple of good McCoy needles that I can send you. Not sure about how many, but what I have is yours.
Thanks!
