Where is a good tounge muffler for a Brodak 40. And how much?

Hello guys & gals.Has anyone compared how much louder the tongue muffler is that the stock muffler with the Brodak 40?I am running the stock muffler on my Oriental with the Brodak 40 ,but I had to add 1.5oz to the tail.The plane is still light but if there is not much of a noise difference I may try the tongue muffler.What a great motor! Dennis

I don't know on the Brodak engine because I never compared these. I don't know why John went to the OS style muffler as the Double Starr had a copy of Art's--lighter and less restrictive.

The Brodak muffler will be more restrictive so the tongue muffler should allow more power. That said, we did a noise comparison with the tongue muffler (15 holes) on the Magnum 53 and found it within FAI noise requirements. In fact, it proved quieter than the pipe set-ups that people were running at the FAI trials a few years back. (Using the same DB meter). It SOUNDS sharper, however--higher pitched. So that would be the major difference you will experience. Noise-wise you will be OK, and should certainly try one if you need to take the lead out of the nose (or tail). Oh, and since the tongue muffler will be less restrictive, you can tap several holes and plug them with short 4-40 bolts to both adjust for back pressure and reduce the noise effect even further.

I've ran both types of Brodak mufflers. While the tongue muffler is louder, it is not by much! I would get the tongue muffler to solve your CG problem but don't expect any power gain. The stock muffler is not as restrictive as others makes( OS comes to mind ), especially if you drill holes as per Brodak instructions.

My Brodak 40 running specs are:
1) 12x4 APC prop cut down to 11 inches, square tips.
2) 5% nitro Powermaster GMA fuel.
3) 42oz model.
4) Brodak tongue muffler.

Everyone at the field comments on how nicely the engine runs. One of the reasons I really like the engine is the sound it makes. While I still think Super Tigre 46 and 60 are the best sounding engines ever, Brodak 40 is DEFINITELY a very close second.

Has anyone run a 3 blade on one of these and how small of a diameter can you go? I have just started break in on mine and was wondering if it could be used where minimum ground clearance is a problem.

I haven't found any 3-bladed props under $10 that work on B40. Last season I broke a prop almost every flying session so a $40 prop was out of the question. This season I've been lucky in that I didn't break any props. If things progress that way, I may splurge on a Brian Eather 10x5 3-blade UCT. If I do, I'll report on it. So far, nothing comes close to the cut down 11x4 APC in term of power.
In my previous posting I forgot to mention lap times: 5.1-5.2 sec/lap.

I would like to get down to a 9 1/2" if possible. The Argus sits low to the ground and I wanted to try using the Brodak 40 in it. The only way I know of is to go with a 3 blade - just tryint to get an idea of which prop to buy.

4-blade prop perhaps? I found that B40 runs more consitently when there is more load on the engine than a typical engine(fox 35). I ran a 10x5 APC on mine and it didn't like it as much. I tried a light TF 11x4 wooden prop and it worked well. It just didn't have enough pitch for a 5.1 lap so I ended up with a cut down 12x4 APC.

Brodak makes a tongue muffler for Brodak 40. I have the unit and it is does its job. I just can't get excited tongue myfflers.
