A suprise (or some variation like something "I don't want to know, but now that I have asked for it I know?")

Pretty close to dead center. Just saying surprise covers a little too much territory. If you just ask for a surprise, I expect I could give you one. In fact, the nature of the surprise could be the surprise itself. I was thinking of a surprise party.
If you got your "surprise" party ten tears from now the real surprise is why did they bother after all this time.

Asking for the time doesn't keep someone from telling you the time. And, even though you might be surprised by the time, were you surprised that someone told you the time?
