He called on a middle aged man named Al (the name was on his shirt), and he pointed to a table with a Simpson meter, a voltage test bulb, a screwdriver, and an air conditioner service manual. He asked, "Suppose the compressor on this unit refuses to turn on. Which of these items would you need to troubleshoot it?"
Al pointed to the screwdriver. The instructor waited and then asked, "and what else would you need?"
Al said he didn't need anything else. The instructor questioned how much Al could troubleshoot with just a screwdriver, and asked how he'd do it.
"Simple," said Al, "I'd just check. If I got fire here and here and here.."
