A lefty, he flew stunt clockwise, and with his left hand. He learned to fly Combat and Rat Race the "normal" way, using his right hand. For fun, he built a Ringmaster with an extra set of landing gears so it would go either way. That is, one gear was "on top" no matter which way he flew it. Inevitably, he was flying it inverted lefthanded, and the right hand learning kicked in, and he did a classic "figure L" burying it in the turf!
Dick did a lot of interesting things. He got an "empty" 55 gallon drum, and to make sure it was empty, lit a torch to the bung hole before using it. It was not empty, and sailed across the neighbors' yards before coming to rest. That earned him the nickname "Rocket Man."
Dick lost the starter rope on his small trim lawn mower, and laid it on its side and "hand propped" it to start it. That one worked out OK!
He was pretty innovative with model fuel, and used it to get fires started in his wood stove, and ran it once in his hand-propped lawn mower.
Modelers are more fun than average folks!
