A friend of mine sold life insurance for a company then called Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL for short). This was a benevolent insurance company whose focus was primarily on members of our Lutheran Church (among whom they also did their benevolent work).
When they expanded his territory, many of the people he served would have to call him long distance, so he decided to get a toll free number. Thinking it best to put it under AAL Insurance in Vincennes, he did so. Shortly thereafter he showed me a tape from his answering machine, totally filled up with people thinking they were calling the head office in Appleton, Wisconsin. It seems the head office didn't have a toll free number, but his was listed under AAL.
What to do? Well, he decided maybe he would just put it under his name. Shortly thereafter he showed me another tape from his answering machine, totally jammed up with calls of people ordering exercise videos.
Did I mention his name was Richard Simmons?
