Slap your hands together just above and in front of the fly. It will take off when you swing at it and fly right into the target zone.

I guess it really doesn't land (that would be down, wouldn't it?) it apparently has to fly up. Since I never watched (I was too busy slapping my hands together above and just in front of it), maybe it rotates over while flying "upwards"??
OK, now how does it stick to the ceiling? How does it walk on the ceiling. Where do those things come from? I just saw a fly in our bathroom this morning and it is in the middle of winter!

Prior to impact, the fly extends its forward legs over its head, makes contact, and uses the momentum it has gathered in flight to hoist the remainder of its body to the ceiling. Thus, the fly proves to be more of an acrobat, than of a fighter pilot practicing his maneuvers.
Do you recall the Greystoke movie about Tarzan? That was the one with the excellent special effects and the brunet Jane. (In real life Jane Porter Clayton is blond.) There is one scene where Tarzan and Jane are sitting talking in the Greystoke castle parlour. A fly comes flying by and Tarzan, without interrupting his conversation, catches it between his finger and thumb without squishing it and pops it into his mouth.

A fly takes off in a 45 Degree angle in reverse so the best way to hit the fly is from behind.
A fly turns over to land about 1 body length from the ceiling.

My understanding is that flies can see pretty much 360 degrees (big eyes with lots of lenses). They may take off backwards sometimes, but not always. (I have squashed a bunch of flies).
