I heard this over 30 years ago and never again....
Two out of state hunters (dudes) came to deer hunt in Wyoming. Since they didn`t know they were required to have a guide or a Wyoming resident while they hunted, they went it alone.
In the distance they saw a magnificent buck deer. The first dude
said "I`ve got to take a shot. This deer is a world record for sure". The distance was at least 1000 yards with three valleys and three hills in between. Surprisingly, the dude aimed, allowed for the wind, range, and difference of elevation and fired and hit the deer! Dude number 2 wasn`t sure it was worth it to walk that far and drag it all the way back to the truck, but dude number 1 said,"At least we`ve got to go look, it`s got to be a rcord deer for sure." They climbed the fence and walked down into the first valley, up the next hill, down the next valley, and up the next hill, down the next valley and up the last hill, and there it was - a record class buck! After seeing it, they had to bring it back, so they started dragging it by the antlers. They went down the valley and halfway up the hill when they sat down to take a rest. The going didn`t get any easier by the time they got to the top, where they took another break. Both were sure it would be worth it, so on they went. When they got to the bottom of the hill, a resident walked by and admired the deer and agreed it was a world class deer.
Dude number 1 said,"We aren`t sure it`s worth it to get it back, it really is hard to drag." The resident said," The way you`re dragging it, the fur is digging into the ground. Drag it the other way and it will be easier." After they rested, they tried his idea. As they got to the top of the hill, they noticed the difference. Down the valley they went without breaking a sweat. As they got to the top of the hill, Dude number 1 said "That guy was right, it`s a lot easier." Dude number 2 said,"Yeah, it`s a lot easier, but we`ve got a problem." Dude number 1 said,"What problem?" Dude number 2 said,"It`s easier to drag, but we`re getting further from the truck."
Maybe that`s why nobody tells it............
