U-key 40

Well The U-key 40 arrived. After about a dozen flights the hinging material on the elevator started to peal off. A Monokote like covering is used for the hinge. A strip on the top and the bottom. I had to use CA hinges at the field for repair. I would suggest that the Monokote be taken off and put new hinges of a different choice.
I,m using a OS LA Blue on it. With 60' eye to eye and a APC 11-4 prop. I really like this plane!

Same thing happenned to mine.

I did like the way it flew tho..I fly with a FP .25 on it per Brett's set-up.

Hi Greg, I don't think you need to do these mods...the model is
perfect as designed.

Tony, only if repair is needed. I had to put the push rod in the center hole of the belcrank. Just couldn't get enough down elevator.

The Ukey's are terrific flyers .....I think that for Sport flying or Stunt training that the "35" and "40" designations are a bit misleading....the "35" does real well with an LA .25 and the "40" is great with a .35.

I am of the opinion that these units might be better trainers to learn "tricks" than the Flite Streak, as they are not so pretty: folks learning hate to smash pretty stuff.

They are also very durable.

Yes I agree, they are very rugged. With the os 40 and the asp 11.4 prop, seems to be a great combanation.

The U-Key's have always been shipped with "trainer" settings at the bellcrank and elevator horn. It's expected that you would need to change the pushrod position at both ends, as you progress from newbie (or refurb!) to PAMPA Expert. The experienced guy will know what he needs to do, but the true CL Beginner might just think he needs more control, when the opposite is true. On the other hand, if there is not enough control to give any response at all, you won't even truly learn how to fly level. I've seen that done, too. Went flying today. The adjustments made to the Ukey at both ends have payed off so far. I moved the control rod at the bellcrank to the middle hole. Also cut off the rod at the elevator about an inch and sodered an adjustable clevis for added adjustment. I have been working on the virtical eights and my squares. Scott says my rounds are improving. I really need to work on my positioning, and form. Mostly handle time.

I'm about to try the U-Key 40 w/FP 25 and a U-Key 35 with Fox Stunt 35.

I also have one of the earlier U-Key 15 ships powered by the Norvel .15 BigMig. I was delighted in it's performance. It's been smacked a few times (will be utlized for my 12 year old's stunt trainer) but little epoxy and it's right back up flying again.

I think there was definitely a niche in this sport this series fulfilled.

Some of the mods on this page have been done by the original designer himself, Jim Carpenter.

I would also mention that a inboard skid on the wing is a must, unless your planning on staying on the grass.
