magnetic building jig

I've used the Magic Magnet Building Jig for 5 or so years now. It's done all it said it would do-my planes continually got straighter and straighter, but never straight. The main component is a 16"X48" sheet metal plate to which cute little plastic rib/former holders affix magnetically. The metallic "board" is marked off in 1/2" squares which greatly assist in lining things up. I've always taped wax paper to the surface to keep things from sticking more or less permanently. A drawback has been getting the metal sheet to lie flat on my plate glass support. It shouldn't/wouldn't be a problem if I had a little more patience-like taping the board to the glass. The Magnets are quite strong, but still manage to move around on me some. I've gotten yeoman use from this set-up, but the more modern Morris Logs and similar are, to me, anyway, easier to maintain accuracy until the fuse/wing are ready to come off the board. The ultimate, with the advent of Laser cutting parts is the rod/wing fixtures advocated by Al Rabe, I suppose. But if you're low-tech like myself, the low-tech Magnet board gets the job done. dale g
