Nering Special

I just received some plans from Carstens, I originally wanted to just get the Snowbird but the Nering Special caught my eye so I got that one also. Has anybody built this ? and do you have any pictures ? Thanks

I believe Tom Martin has one that Les Nering built. I'll try and get a picture of it if I can but it may not be for a week or so.

I have a wing, stab& elevator done, had the fuse, but my Airedale thought it was a chew toy. Bill Werage flew Les's plane a lot, said it was very good. I talked to Les about it, have some notes somewhere,
recall that he said the nose length shown on the plans was to short by
a inch.

Some guy had one at the '96 Nats. It was brown he wanted me to help him flying (pit) but he was flying a few other planes first. I was distracted watching Baron practice on the grass & lost contact with him. It could of been Les I don't know. Nice looking plane for my money. Les told me in a letter that it will preform better than most pilots can preform, he was quite onfident in theis plane. (I never built one).

The Nering Special was published in the Jan 89 issue of Flying Models magazine. I remember reading the article many years ago, but no longer have those old magazines, nor recall of the picture (CRS).

Hopefully, someone with that issue will post a scan.

I don't know if you remember this thread, but my grandson was on and found this. I was the guy at the '96 Nats. That plane was my own design. I used the Bucks Deluxe wing and moments. Then I just stole the Nerings profile basically. I named it Starfire.

Unfortunately, I damaged the plane by flying in the dark so I flew my backup plane, this one was a Nering. That plane brought me to a 17th or 18th finish in Advanced.

If I knew how to scan pictures, I'd post pictures of my Nering and my Starfire.



Vic Macaluso got the original Nering from Les. He then gave it to me and I put an ST .46 in it. I then sold it and don't know what happened to it.

I built another one, but modified with a longer nose and equal wing panels. I refinished that plane into the one at the Nats in '96.

I built another one but finished all white. I put an OPS .40 in it and it flew wonderful. But I promised my friend (Mike Chiodo) I'd give it to him.

Glad my grandson found this.

Don: If you can scrape up some pictures of it that would be great.

Here is a picture of the Nering in Silver. This is the backup plane I flew at the '96 Nats. I came in 18th.

I took a picture of a picture and put it onto the computer. It's not that clear, but that's all I can do.

Don - I bought the Nering Special from you quite a few years back. It then went to Bruce Stecker.

As far as I know, it's still somewhere in the Philly Flyers club.

In fact, I'm not sure but I may still have the engine.

Bob - - - Last time I saw the Nering fly it belonged to Jack Weston.
I don't know if he still owns it, but I suspect your statement
stands - - - "somewhere in the Philly Flyers".

I like the fuse mounted gear version better, just me.

But I thought he bought it at a swap from Nering himself maybe five or six years ago. At that time the enforcement of the BOM rule excluded Jack from using the plane, even in local meets, so he went in another direction.

Dan and I had it for a while and then sold it to Bruce.

I cannot imagine why this would be true. No club in our area (close to where Les lives, by the way) prohibits the use of planes that have new owners. We follow the PAMPA rules that allow all such participation - just minus the 20 appearance points. Except at the AMA Nationals, the BOM rule has never prohibited use of such a plane.

Remember this was five or six years ago, before the flood of ARFs. Then it was expected that a flier built what he flew, even tho some chose to bend the rules and few competitors protested. It was a grayer area then. In most local meets these days BOM is window dressing, if specified at all.

Our contestants just give up the appearance points. There are a couple of Les' planes still active among club members. BOM rule is still honored here.

Yep Bob, it's sorta green sorta unnamable. I believe Jack thought the controls were very quick, but controllable. Last time I saw it fly the ST46 seemed a little tired. Plane had some trouble going over the top. A neat looking classic bird, good flier.

Jack believes he owns THE Nering Special that appeared in Flying Models, January 1989. He says its a fabulous flier despite the ST46 now powering the plane. The engine is marginal, even on 60' lines. Jack bought the plane from a Philly Flyer.

Sorry about that. Actually it doesn't just say Nering on the wing but Les Nering Special. The "Les" and "Special" are in very small lettering.

If you build it make sure you have plenty of power. I'm flying it with an ST 46 and it struggles over the top on 63' lines. It weighs 57 ozs. I switched to 60' and it flys much better. The cornering of this airplane is beyond your wildest dreams!

I would use it in a contest but it's really effected by the wind with the ST.

I was the third owner of the plane. When I had it, the original plane was done in acrylic lacquer. Vic Macaluso bought it off Les Nering, and I bought off Vic in 1992. I sold it to Bob Zambelli around 1994 at the Edison meet in New Jersey. I haven't seen it since until you posted the pictures of it.

What is it covered with because that isn't the original paint scheme?

Bruce Stecker bought it from Dan and Bob and refinished it.

The fuselage is painted and the wing, stab/elevator is monocote.

It still remains in Philly Flier hands!

Don't know how well this will be but here goes.
