I just received the latest Brodak catalog and on the first page is an introduction for a new Brodak .049 . It goes on to say " a completely new design ,manufactured in the same factory as the Brodak .25 and .40". No price was given , so I checked The Brodak web site , but no mention of the new motor . Could this be the new 1/2 A motor for stunt that a lot of us have been looking for ?

Bill - this is a completely new engine from Brodak. I spent quite a bit of time evaluating the prototype and and it appears to be a very user friendly and smooth 1/2A powerplant.

AAC construction with a 3-bolt backplate.
Set up for a standard long-reach plug.
Wrist pin.
Weight is about the same as a Tee-Dee .049.

The first two photos below show the engine and the third shows the Brodak MK II crank compared to one from an OK Cub .049.

I'm not sure of when it will appear on the website but you should be able to get info from Brodak by phone or e-mail.

Hope this helps.

Well at least it wont be Chinese, but Moldavian. Given the success of the 25&40 I can almost get myself to order one when they get to the shore,

Is the head removable? I was wondering if it took the Galbreath head. It's too bad they're not set up to take a Nelson or Turbo plug to begin with. The other thing I'd like to see is a tank/mount, like with the Norvel Startup.

Isk - the head is removeable. It's captured by three long bolts that go down through the sleeve, into the case. Keyed of course so it can only go together one way.

No tank - most people seem to prefer a little wedge tank, especially when mounting on a profile.

Note that the new BABY CLOWN ARF is set up for beam mounting - much more convenient than the original radial setup.

The photo shows the new version and a comparison.

The new combo, by the way, REALLY WORKS!

If the head is attached with 3 bolts, rather than threading in, the Galbreath head will not fit.

Also, it appears the engine would fit a Norvel tank mount, if you have one already. My Mk I has same bolt pattern/spacing as Norvel.

Ray - these pictures should help. The engine on the right is the MK I.

Bob,
Any idea when the new Baby Clown with the beam mounts will be available from Brodak?

Hi, Andy - not positive but it may be in stock now.

Give them a call at 724 966 2726. Ask for Patty, tell her I recommended you call.

That looks like one strongly built engine! That conrod and the size of the crank web are very comforting. It looks like it was designed to take a lot of punishment. Any word on a diesel head? It should take it easily. Also, I bet there is room to hop that puppy up if combat is your game.

BTW, the tank in the photo of the yellow Baby Clown looks to be closer to 1/2 ounce, not a full ounce. One fluid ounce is 1.08 cubic inches. The tank is roughly triangular, so the volume would be V=.6 x h x w x l (the .6 would be .5 for a true triangle, I am fudging). So, how big is it really?

A Norvel .049 with a 5.7x3 prop on 15% Nitro 22% Oil will do the pattern on about 7/8 ounce of fuel, the .061 needs about a 1/4 ounce more on a 6x2 prop (higher rpm, bigger engine). This is on 45 ft lines and about 4.5 second lap times.

Is that a plastic back plate such as everyone has talked about so badly on the O.S. motors?

Guess I am going to have to get one to go with the MK-I and the .061. It is one tough looking engine.

Besides the Norvel tank mount, what others might be available? I've got a couple of vintage Tatone 1/2A metal tank mounts for TDs, but I'd like to find something newer.

Any word about fuel consumption? Also, the MK 1 had a problem of run instability in hot weather. How does the new one work out in that respect?

The tank shown (1 ounce?) will not get it through the entire pattern but the engine is still tight and I expect the consumption to improve as it accrues more time.

So far, I have seen no performance differnce in different weather but, I have run only 10% nitro.

I will be trying 20/22% soon.

Advice to anyone trying this engine - the prototypes were tight with a good TDC pinch. If production engines follow suit, be patient with the break-in.

Hello V-12,
Very interesting engine ..... how about posting a photo of the combustion side of the head? One thing tho ..... I am not sure I like the design feature in that the cylinder sleeve (half of it anyhow) is captured between the head and the c/case, although I think that I might envision a fairly easy remedy to this potential problem.
Sincerely, Donald Garry

Bob Z , how does the motor run compare between the MK II and the MK I ? Is the MK II more powerful , does it run in a strong 2/stroke mode and does it have good fuel draw ?
