ENYA converted to Ignition#0 source
I have just aquired an ENYA .29 Model 5224 that has been converted to Ignition. I have a "few" questions. Is there some reason that this thing can not be run on the test stand with standard 12V automotive ignition system parts? I should still have some coils and condensers. I can use any of the 12V batteries I have. What fuel should this thing use? I will not run less than 20% Castor Oil as lube. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I have not even seen an ignition model engine until I opened the box for this one, I had only seen pictures.
TIA,

Hi

Going WAY back to my youth, I can see no reason at all why it shouldn't use standard automotive coil / condenser setup except that the coil could maybe draw a bit more current. But for test that should be no problem at all.

In my mid teens we ran some spark motors that way (we could not get the correct "mini" coils easily)

We also used standard lubricating oil (multigrade) and petrol (gasoline) - I think about 25% oil - but these were old motors of uncertain origin. Remember that gasoline runs much hotter than methanol though.

Run it on Fox Superfuel, I run an Orwick 29 spark engine on this and it works fine. If you put the engine in an airplane, you have the option of test flying with a glow plug.

Remember, it isn't legal for the Ignition bonus in OTS.

Dee,
Yah, I know But I think it will be fun to for me learn about spark ignition model engines without risking an expensive piece of equipment. If I get this one figured out I could consider buying a replica sparker. If I were to compete in OTS a 10 point bonus could have a significant impact on my score.

A guy had an ignition Frog 500 in an Old Time plane at the UK nationals - GREAT! I seem to remember I also saw an OS also converted to spark.

So if your motor runs fine using a car coil (check for arcing on the points - there should be very little) you could pick up a mini coil on eBay - or there are vendors as well

The Frog 500 old timer would've been Glen Alison's "Moitle"!

How odd that we should have two flyers with a fairly unusual name (Glen Allison/Alison) on two continents with the same name (except for 1 'L' difference).

Glen is also one to add to the parade of guitar playing control-liners!

The OS converted to spark was Mike Nelson's (pipemakermike) in his Go-Devil!

Just for the test stand, Auto parts will work fine. When you get ready to fly, Dr. Spark (Floyd Carter) has the lightweight transistorized Ignition systems to make it easier.

Also contact Bob Zambelli ("V12" on this forum), who has a bunch of current experience with sparkers.
