Reworked Brodak 40s?

The archives, both Product Reviews and this forum, have a lot of Brodak 40 references. Although I didn't read all of them (who could??!!), looks like most folks are running B40s straight out of the box, correct?

The muffler comments were mixed. Worth changing, and if so, to what?

The comments about the bad sleeve installation on some early ones was worrisome. How does one check that?

How do you tell an early model from a later one?

The Brodak 40 was designed to be a stunt engine from the get-go so no need for any mods.

The early muffler had a fairly small outlet and a few of the sleeves were slightly turned when they were assembled. Neither is a major issue. The sleeve is easily checked and re-aligned with the exhaust port.

If you have an early engine and need all the poop you can get out of it you can either go to a tongue muffler, drill additional holes in the stock muffler or just buy a Brodak 25 and swap mufflers. You will end up with two great stunt engines

Don't think without disassembly there is an easy way to distinguish the timing difference between an early or late engine. There was a good thread posted a little while back that covered this pretty well.

I have quite a bit of time with both versions and I wouldn't hesitate to buy/run either one.

Great motor with no need to modify. As with any motor that has an unpinned cylinder, make sure the cylinder is properly aligned before running the motor. Order the Big Art tougue muffler and you will be happy!

Antone Kephart reworks B40's. I don't know what he does or why, or if he wants more business, but the engines run well. Contact info is in the handy-dandy PAMPA directory.
