Flying Models.. Thankyou!

Flying Models is the only National magazine that has continually supported all types of models airplanes.

While I knew that a review of the "JD Falcon" was upcoming in the March 2007 issue, I had no idea to the what extent.

I want to publicly thank editor, Frank Fanelli, and Bill Hummel for their work. And of course, my long time friend, coach, mentor, and second father...John D'Ottavio.

Yes, FM is a great magazine - the only remaining periodical covering all areas of model aviation and true to the spirit of model aviation and modeling itself. I read the article, and it was very good indeed to see coverage of your fine kit and continued recognition of our cottage industries' CL stunt contribution.

You guys dont think MA covers most aspects of modeling? The JD falcon article was in MA a long time ago. It was a good one. I am curious to see this one.

I keep hearing how good FM is. I guess I need to pony up and get a subscription.

The D'Ottavio "Jerseyan" was in the Sept 2004 Model Aviation.

Yes, MA covers them all, but very much slanted towards RC.

FM and M.A.N. have been in publications longer than any other US model airplane magazines. It is unfortunate that Flying Models does not have a larger distribution. As Bill Hummel says, they are great people to work with. They deserve our support, since they don't have the built in distribution provided by AMA membership.

FM editor, Frank Fanelli is making great efforts, and the Photoshop work done in the new March 2007 issue is a fine example this.

Magazines are at the mercy of those who submit artlicles, and need distribution to survive. Allan Brickhaus is making great efforts to recruit articles for FM.

While I champion all the new publications. Magazines have always had limited inputs for articles, and I hope that the new magazines, and online magazines, don't dilute the sources.

Yep, Flying Models and Model Aviation both still have considerable coverage of control line, including a large listing of control line plans. When I checked the MAN web site last summer, they still had a fair number of control line plans, but nothing like when they were a full-service model airplane magazine. I was sorry to see Aviation Modeler International disapear from local magazine racks last spring. They had many more articles dealing with inovation in CL. I especially liked the two part article they had on getting CL models to be able to do axial rolls intentionally without rolling up the lines. Haven't seen anything like it since MAN did an article on Jim Walker doing it back in the 40s. The AMI article even showed a couple schemes to allow a model to roll either direction.

I have to admit a couple years ago, I expressed this concern at the MAN booth at Toledo, and was told that they had gotten quite a number of comments not only about their dropping CL and FF, but also concern that they were becoming a product review of RC ARFs, with very little content for those of us like to build. They admitted when I mentioned I might be dropping my subscription they were looking at increasing their builder's content. My impression was that they improved a bit last year, so I decided to give them one more chance. It would have been a bit of a shock to drop them, since I bought my first MAN sometime about 1952.

I had a combat plane launcher published a few months before they went RC. I sent them a msg telling them to forget it and dropped my subscription at that point. Really sad.

The staff at Flying Models was a lot of help late last year when we reworked the PAMPA ad. They're the only model aviation magazine we subscribe to beyond Model Aviation and Stunt News.

I've been reading "Flying Models" about as long as I've been flying models.
They've always done a great job of representing the "building" side of model aviation in all aspects. They certainly are one of the very few that support Free Flight in any significant capacity.
When Bob Hunt left the publication some years ago I had serious reservations that it would continue to support all types of aeromodeling. It seemed to me that we would simply be getting another R/C magazine. Not so. Frank Fanelli has done a great job of balancing coverage. Personally I think they give too much space to "park flyers", but then the park flyer guys back east probably think they give too much space to CL.

Anyway, I think we of the modeling community owe a debt of gratitude to FM for continuing to be a "real" modeling magazine.

How much would you pay for another magazine, in English, that had PLENTY of control line and free flight coverage, including competitions? Do you think one exists? (Apart from MA and FM, of course..)

Hey doesn't Brodak also publish a c/l magazine?

AMI, a great magazine, but for some reason, none of our local hobby shops seem to have been able to get it since March 2009. I especially liked the frequent frre plans that were included.

I hope the sister publication, Flying Scale Models, doesn't disapear as well. The would be a true tragedy. Far worse than RCM going away.
