Best Stuka stunt...

Hi,

Jonathan is about to turn 14 and he has shown interest in a Stuka Stunt model (Actually, the Stuka Divebomber has always been one of his favorites).

Any recommendations for either a kit or plans for a Stuka using a .35 motor, maximum displacement? His flying abilities are at the novice level.

Not specifically but either find a profile stuka or take a Twister kit and style the fuse to look like a Stuka.

No sense trashing alot of work building a full-body plane until he gets past the crashing stage.

Henry,
Certainly I agree with Curt's suggestion of using a profile as a trainer.
However, I don't know of any available kits for profile Stukas.

RSM Distribution does have a very nice kit of Don Still's Stuka Stunt available (built up fuselage). This is a good flying airplane and it might be possible to duplicate the airplane in a profile version using the kit plans.

Eric Rule, RSM's owner might even be willing to laser cut the parts for such a "KIT".

I don't have the link available for RSM but I'm sure someone else can provide it here.

Since the building is to be mainly Jonathan's share of the project, I think the conversion at his stage of ability would be too much.

The conversion is not really that much. You dont have to go to far with it. You could simply start by making the Canopy and the rudder the righg shape. And trim the flaps to look like Stuka flaps. The rest is built to plans and instruction specs. You arent changing much at that point just some added balsa here and there and some trimming here and there. Get a twister kit. Lay the plans out and sketch with pencil on the plans where you need to add and trim on the fuse and flaps and get natching balsa sizes at your local hobby shop and go for it. Then the color scheme you choose will help it scream STUKA!!

Dick Stepney here in the UK had a profile Still Stuka!

I know John Lowry was planning on putting out a profile Stuka but I haven't seen it on his website yet. I believe it was a bit smaller than a Twister. This one was built by Gluedobber Steve Raney.

Hi Henry, the Stuka is one of my favorite planes as well, I would say a profile Stuka would be best, the Dick Mathis I have not built but the plans are for shure available from Model Airplane news. I think I have just about researched out every Stuka available today and you know though the Don Still is alot of work etc. it might not be too bad either the RSM kit would be the only one available now, they did make a Dick Mathis kit but of course that is no more now unless you find one someplace. Leonard has plans for the scaled down version of the Don Still which is for a .15 size engine and it might be another option unless you want to have a .35 size plane only. Glad to hear Jonathan likes the Stuka, I know when the Cox one was available was my first C/L plane.

Doesn't a real Stuka have bent wings? I do like the models of Stuka shown here as well. Great job guys!

Jack Sheeks published two Stuka Stunters in Flying models. One, (CF212 june 1970, 58" span with 40 sized engine)had a fully sheeted wing, the other was in Carsten Publications book "A Decade of Design 2" , page 19. Both had the bent Stuka wing, and both are I beamers.

Superclown did you get the pics of mine i sent to you ? I see that elwyn also posted a pic. Since his building abbilties are in the biggner stages kinda like mine are this is a super easy build and will be perfect for him.

I just finished the RSM Stuka Stunt, it is a very fine kit but does require a level of building skills that a beginner might not have. If this is a joint venture then go for it, it builds nice light plane.

Doesn't Stuka Stunt Works have plans for the "Uncle Louie" Profile Stuka?

I looked on the SSW plans pages and didn't see any profile Stuka. You'd think they'd have the Mathis Stuka. I think the Lowry kit Stuka would be ideal for a novice flier, for a .25LA. It's basically the "Wingmaster", which is a straight chord, light weight, imitation Ringmaster. Check with Lowry and see if the Stuka kit is available, and report back! Steve
