LOCKHEED SIRIUS

My semi-scale Lockheed SIRIUS from my own plans. Span is 59" and power is a Stalker with RE muffler. Weight is 60 oz. Construction is conventional balsa/ply with planked fuselage. There is 1" dihedral under each wing tip. Paint is Brodak stock colors.

Absolutely beautiful. Hope it flies as good as it looks. I'm sure you are aware of the Orwick 64 powered Lockheed Sirius that J C Yates published in Air World about 60 years ago. Looks a lot like yours (what a coincidence) except he had a canopy over the cockpits. I have the article if you are interested.

Would an Atwood Triumph.49 be enough for the Yates Sirius? I just scored a sweet one at a swap meet.

I don't know, the Yates Sirius was not very big. A quick guesstimate is about 280 sq inches wing, 42&3/4 span. It also did not have a symmetrical airfoil and I would have to measure the prints to see if it had adequate stab/elev area for stunt but they look awfully small to me. Could probably do fair in OTS as the airfoil is not that bad. I think an LA 25 would be more appropriate. Can you imagine this thing with a good Orwick 64 on the point? Plans quote 85 mph and weight at 4&1/2 pounds!!

Don, thanks for the info on the Yates Sirius. I was looking for something large,about S.D.Zilch size for the Atwood. Guess I'll keep looking.

Beautiful model, I could picture Charles and Ann Lindberg sitting in it! Charting new air routes in the Pacific ! Wonderful:-)

Before anyone gets big ideas about building a Sirius, you should know:
1. You need to score a metal or fiberglass cowling of 5 1/4" diameter (not easy to do)
2. Think twice about the job of planking the fuselage with all those balsa strips!
I can clean up the plans and add some missing details, but only if there is enough interest to justify the effort.
