First pic is Dad with Paul Jr. and a CL model in Osborne, OH, just outside Wright-Patterson AFB. Ugly plane! Brown Jr., it appears. Jr. was born in '38, so if he looks to be 5, it's during the war. If you think he looks 7, then after...but I'd guess, during.

Model Airplane Contest, about 1951, in Winchester, TN. We think this was officially the Franklin County HS. Anyway, it was on the N. side of Winchester, on the road toward Estill Springs and Tullahoma. I'm the dude on the far right, with my Thermic 18. Brother Hugh in middle with his Jetex 50 powered Jasco ???. Neighbor kid, then Paul Jr. and another neighbor kid. The butt ugly plane in front of Paul was a trainer made out of junk and an old wing, probably given to Paul or Dad. The engine was an O&R, I think it was a .60, and run as a glow. Will we ever find pics of Dad's Barnstormer???? Steve

Shame these kids didn't have a video game to play way back then. Better still, couch potato and watch MTV.

Received more info today on the model in #1 pic. The slide frame says: "'Tryphoon' Osborn Park Aug. '43" The thought is that the model may have been called a "Typhoon", but the engine was difficult, and got modified by the observers or participants.

It appears that the LO's are in the right wing, so CW flying. Dad flew CCW in the '50's, tho. It looks quite different than any later originals, and I don't really think it was a kit or plans built, so we're thinking it was perhaps acquired in a "horse-trading" deal, which happened in those days, and especially in the military, as folks transferred and/or got shipped overseas. Any information on the design would be of interest. We don't think the old man would have named a model, and don't think he would have designed something with 'fluff', like this, and especially wouldn't have painted it red. More of an open cockpit kinda guy, anyhoo. Steve

As far as "Ugly" is concerned, as they say, "Beauty (or Ugly) is in the eye of the beholder..." and I kind of like the old thing....it certainly has a lot of character, and I would have been as excited to own that as a kid, as I would be now with a new "Trivial Pursuit"! It looks like it might be related to the Stanzel "Shark".

Even though this is out of context for a model airplane forum, I'm glad you posted it. We were fortunate enough to have spent 10 days in Italy (Tuscany) last summer, and its history is fascinating. For anyone that is interested in the history of this monastery, Google will provide you with lots to read.
