CA removal questions

Here's a building question for you. I was wondering If anybody had a procedure for getting CA off of a kitchen table top. Some how, a big ole drop got through my defenses and hardened on the table top. this is one of those standard brown table tops like you might see on an 8-foot foldable type table. My wife would rather have the drop stay if there is a chance of dulling the finish somehow. - thanx jb

There is a CYA remover, one brand is called "Uncure", but try it on an unseen area before you use it on the top. Chances are however that its already effected the finish material its cured to, and will leave a void where it was. The only other thing is acetone, and you sure don't want to use that on the table top!

Depends on what the material of the table top is. If Formica, it would probably pop off w/o damage to anything.

The available standard "de-bonder" for CyA might mar laquered finishes - it's usually almost straight Nitromethane, I believe. You mentioned the surface's gloss. You could check an inconspicuous area, like an edge or underside with the same finish.

Luck, and be glad you didn't leave any skin with that drop of CyA...

Well Lou, it's still possible he could lose some skin if his wife gets upset enough.

Like you said, the only thing I know that's for sure is nitromethane.

I also know that varnish removers will work but certainly this is not the application for that. Most of them are also pretty toxic.

Can you say "refinish" with Ormsby's...

Interestingly, CA can't stand much heat (one of the many reasons I don't like the stuff!)

It may be an idea to try a bit of heat on it. I THINK it lets go at about 80C (that's from the dim recesses of my not always reliable memory)

What about just trying to pop it of with a single edge razor blade?

M.E.K...it will however remove any finish on the table if it is wood...if its plastic or some sort of vinyl...it wont do a thing to it...mek is good for cleaning it off your hands too(cheap too about 5 bucks a quart at lowes)....jim

I don't know about that Jim. From a safety point of view at least. That stuff is dangerous. One drop in your eye and you have less then 10 seconds to flush it out or you can lose up to and including all vision in the affected eye.it also can be absorbed through the pores of your skin and is not something you want in your bloodstream. Just my 2C worth.

I had the same problem recently and used some Brodak uncure to remove it. It was rock solid and would not come off, but the uncure just disolved it and it wiped away without a trace. The bench top was made of formica.

MEK is great. It will also remove the lining of your lungs over time.

Don't forget a blown out liver

M.E.K is a dangerous item,(liver, lung and "drain bamage") however the one mentioned as a 10 second wipe out of the eye, I believe is Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide a catalyst for polyester resin. I've had M.E.K. in my eye before, the pain sucks, but I didn't lose my eyesight. Stupid move on my behalf (no eye protection) removing white helment scuff marks from an F4 canopy.

Hello JB,

Try your wife's nail polish remover. It will also remove even baked on oil on your engines plus lacquer. On the table, be careful for the finish may be damaged by using it.
Also do you know when adding different color dope to silk span, paint the edge of your tape with at less two coat of your wife clearless nail polish, to prevent the next color from seeping under the tape. Only thing, the tape after painting with next color should be removed within a hour, when new color had dried, else tape create a permanent bounding with prior color and peel off that color when removed too late. Even the blue color tape will do that.

What will remove CYA from bare wood? If I can't clean the trailing edges of my Twistmaster I'll have to go with Monokote.

IF the table was waxed (ask your wife) there is a chance that by just sliding a thin (doble edge) razor blade flat on the tabletop that the drop will just pop off. I have done that on my shop counter top that has a smooth plastic surface. If the surface is wood and not waxed there is little chance ! good luck ! Jose
