Just finished the Junior Nobler, except for balancing. It ended up nose heavy, will take 1 oz. of lead as far back as I can get it. Is this too much for a plane this size? I am using an OS 15LA.

A heavier plane properly balanced will fly better than a light one that is not properly balanced.
The problem with older designs is that they were intended for non -muffled engines.
Add the muffler and you will need tail weight.
If you want to keep the weight down get a light spinner, and a lighter ( and likely louder) muffler.

I agree about the lighter older engines without mufflers, but you can fight some of the weight gain by using a smaller displacement (=lighter) but just as powerful modern engine to offset the difference. So for example, a LA10 might is reasonable smaller than the LA15. Also using (if you can find one) a tongue muffler will help a lot.

My father built one using a Mccoy .19 in it.I was very young at the time.I just remember the plane crashing.After an extensive rebuild I remember the several Cox wrenches taped around the tail of the plane for tailweight

.He then calculated the weight needed and buried it inside.Good thing for red bricks.He finally settled on a steelfin Fox.15.I sure miss that ole plane.The only memory left if the ruddder still covered in silk looking as good as it did 30 yrs ago. Ken

I powered mine with a PAW 15 diesel with muffler, so due to the extra weight of this motor i moved wing 1/2" forward, plus i didn't incorporate the lighting holes in the fuse sides. Balance came out OK.

Hi

My Junior Nobler, came out nose heavy too with an LA15 and muffler. I flew it anyway and it would not turn very well. I added 1oz of lead to the tail wheel strut area and woo hoo! Balance is now spot on and it turns like a sun of a gun. It flies so well it inspired me to build a full size '57 Nobler, which is now also nearly ready to fly.

Did you notice on the plan they show a Tee Dee 15 and a Fox 15 I think. Both these engines are heaps lighter than an OS LA15.
