Brian Turner's stunt engine piston pictures

Here are a few pictures of the piston. No making pictures as the piston was already made. Actually Brian made it for the Stalker 61 LT LS. He wanted to move the baffle a little closer to the centre of the piston to improve the combustion.

To get to this stage has taken about 100 hours. as well as the bits shown here Brian has made 2 cylinders that are off in Russia being chromed.

Thanks for the continuing photos and description of the machining process. It takes an amazing amount of work to create a superior engine for a model airplane.

Do you have any guess as to what the number of hours are that go into the fabrication? If all engines were custom made like this, most of us would not be able to afford to buy one. Back to rubber power, I guess.

The freeflight model is a fairly common competition model of the period - about 1967(ish) powered by an elfin 149. My local model club had some serious freeflight competitors and the model was built from my own plans and measurements of their models

What size is Brian's engine that he is making?

It is a Long stroke 61 a straight swap for the Stalker Brian has been using the last couple of years.

This is the model Brian has campaigned for the last 2 years. Started with a standard Stalker 61 LT LS and the engine has been progressively improved as Brian has worked on it changing the combustion chamber shape, the inlet timing, the transfer port volume, reducing the volume of the crankcase and shielding the plug. On the way he has started making his own propellers and working on developing an understanding of what works best for him.

The model is based on the same numbers as a Yatsenko artf same wing section and areas etc.

This is where he started from. This model is a Starmaker that has been hanging on the wall since the 60's

Mike, Could you explain your comments about Brian's developments with 'Shielding the plug'. I have seen one sort of shield fitted to a Retro .60, is this the same sort of thing? What is the function of the shield and what does it look like and how is it fitted to the engine?

I assume that you mean the taper round the top of the piston. This is put on when the piston is fitted to the cylinder. Brian has explained how he does it to me and I will try to get him to do some pictures when he gets the chromed cylinders back from the Ukraine. It is trickier to do because of the baffle on the top of the piston.
