Bad Stunt News CD

My Stunt News CD arrived today. I popped it in the laptop, clicked on the icon and got an error message that the file was damaged and could not be repaired.

I turned the CD over and there was an oval flaw in the disk. Who do I need to contact about getting a replacement CD?

My CD also was damaged or defective. The pdf file of the cover worked fine but the main body pdf repeatedly said it was damaged and could not be repaired. The mailer sleeve looked fine but the disk itself had a spot on the surface and what looked like stress cracks in one area. I tried buffing the area out with no success. I don't really need a replacement CD if the file could be emailed to me. It's no problem to burn a CD myself once I have a good file to work with. Looks like I'll be messaging the folks listed above shortly.

Same for mine , I wonder if they got a bad batch of CDs?

Bad CD's will be replaced. Please notify Dave Gardner if yours is no good. He'll be advising the printer which ones need to be re-mailed.

The printer has been made aware there have been problems and is working on this with the vendor who burns the disks. Please bear with them. They'll get it fixed.

I also have a bad CD (same symptoms). I contacted Tom McClain. He stated that a new copy would be sent.

BTW, I just did a physical check of the CD. There does appear to be some sort of anomaly in the substrate; not exactly a bubble, but a definite flaw.

After my earlier post here I realized I hadn't tried my CD, either. In fact, it was still sealed in the mailer.

I took it out and examined it. There were two obvious flaws in the substrate easily visible. I was sure it wouldn't run but loaded it in the computer anyway. It was a little slow, but it loaded completely and ran fine once loaded. I'll copy it just for "insurance".

In the meantime, we've got Russ's hardcopy issue of Stunt News so it's not much of a problem for us. It would be frustrating if the CD were our only copy.

It does look like the CD vendor may have gotten a bad batch of disks.

Mine has some sort of blemish on it too, though it seems to work OK.

Mox-Nix, though...I'm going back to 1st Class print copies. Don't care for all that scrolling; would rather see entire pages at once.

Got word from Dave G or Tom McC that the current issue of CDs is running about 5% flawed. Glad to hear from Randi's post #4 that "steps are being taken." A local friend gets the paper edition, so I'm not that much inconvenienced.

Scrolling or not, I prefer the CD edition... To each his...

Odd, though, of NetFlix, the only damaged disks were obviously cracked or scuffed so bad the laser reader MUST blink. Ah, well, that's a pretty high-dollar commercial effort. We'll get done right by; our guys are friends, not just vendors.

Guess I am lucky or the good Lord is watching over me. Got my CD the day after getting back from VSC. Opened immediately and popped into the PC. Everything came up as it should. Even printed off the pages of finishing that Randy Powell put in it. Met him at VSC and is quite a gentelman. Just wanted everyone to know.

I am like Randi. Mine has visible flaws but seems to work fine.

Recived my CD yesterday. There is a scuff mark on it but my computer reads it just fine. I did make a back up for archival purposes just in case.

Do the people with the CD option receive a copy of the annual membership directory?

What is more likely is that your CD drives are older drives and won't read the newer CD blanks. If you are computer literate, try a firmware update to your CD drive, if its available.

New firmware for CD drives updates compatibility for newer discs.

There are two .PDF files on the CD, one for the cover and the other for the rest of the issue. I can read the .PDF file for the cover with no problem. I can also read the January-February CD with no problem.

I tried three different computers (2 laptops and a workstation), 4 different CD drives, two operating systems (XP and Vista) and ADOBE Readers 8.1, 8.0, and 7.0. I received the same error on all.

For those that would like to check if they need a firm ware upgrade. Follow these steps if you don't know your DVD drive make and model. There is a good chance it is not the same brand as your computer.

1.Click on Start
2.Click on Control Panel
3.Click on the icon "System"
4.Now click on "Device Manager"
4.Now click on the sub folder for DVD/CDRom. Your make and model will be displayed. Now due a Google search for the drivers.
-Example: My DVD drive is a Sony DRU-710A so this is what I Google. Several web sites are shown. Normally I like to go to the manufacturers site, less garbage and adverts to wade through. Sony shows both firmware and various other updates. Just follow the directions.

No March/April SN cd here in Canada as of yet....so I don't know if I got a good one or a bad one [photo not recovered: sipcof.gif] Any other Canadian types get there's yet?

It took 4 CDs, but I finally got one that worked. I really want to thank Tom McClain and Dave Gardner for their work on this. They were really super fast getting replacements to me.

I felt bad about all the trouble that I was putting them through. I know that they all volunteers and I really appreciate all the effort that they put into this -- A sincere THANK YOU!
