Frisky Pete plans, DVD program and written story now available fr...

For several years I've been receiving requests for plans for the Frisky Pete that I flew at VSC and used to win the 25th anniversary Old Time Stunt contest at the Garden State Circle Burners field.

I hesitated to draw these up for sale because I could not find anyone in Cal Smith's (the designer of the plane who passed away many years back) family from which to get permission. I have searched for over 10 years to find someone who could be asked for this permission, but have not had any luck. I have decided to go ahead and make these plans available, but I've also decided to donate $1.00 from each sale to the AMA Scholarship fund in Cal's name.

Actually I'm making much more than the plan for the Frisky Pete available. I've decided to add to the package a 30 minute DVD program that originally appeared in SFVM (Stunt Flyer Video Magazine) Volume 1, No. 2. This piece features a complete explanation of the model and shows its many adjustable and removable features (All of which are OTS legal mods...) and even a flight of the model at the GSCB field! An additional bonus is a written story about the model and more about the mods and the reasons for them.

The plans show the changes to accommodate a larger fuel tank with a detailed view of the modified section.

This package of the Frisky Pete plan, DVD program and written story is priced at $19.95, plus 4.60 Priority Mail postage. The plans come rolled in a tube along with the DVD and story.

At this year's VSC I bought a set of the Frisky Pete plans with the DVD and written story from Bob. The plans are excellent (no surprise there) and the DVD brings them to life.

Since I was given a Fox .25 new in box, never run or even had the needle valve screwed in, with the original Fox instructions the Frisky Pete seems like a natural. The friend who gave me the engine said that he got it from his uncle's estate, and since my friend flies only R/C he said that he had no use for any C/L junk...aw, heck! The least I could do is take it off his hands for him.

Bob, blow that up to 59" wing, change this,add that,etc.etc. Make a Classic lookin CLPA Job. Haven't seen little Pete since judging at Cleveland 100 years ago.

There's an old saw that goes "If it looks good, it will fly good." Or something to that effect.

I have no idea how the Frisky Pete flies, but it sure seems like it would fly well. Short coupled, lots of stab/elevator area. Nice wing.

But there is something intangible about how all the elements of the design seem to complement one another.

Just looking at that machine gives me the impression it would be a good flier.

I wonder what that design scaled up to man-carrying size and fitted with an O-540 would be like? Might not snap like the modern acro monoplanes, but I bet it would make a great sport/airshow plane with enough ailerons.

I liked Frisky Pete since I first saw it on that issue of SFVM that Bob references.

Apparently it flys well enough to win Bob some OTS contests.

If you have Tom Morris' "OLD TIME STUNT CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS", it is the next to last plan, so you can see what the original plans look like.

Cal Smith authored a book called Cal Smith on Model Building for Fawcett books. In the book he profiled some of his designs and a couple by Bill Winter and Frank Lashek.
The Frisky Pete is one of them with construction article and plans.Also included is how to make a Firebay bipe and a Fireball bipe. Here are some pictures.
