Now to start a controversy ?
What'll do more work ? Im presuming the twin ball races give the Super Tigre the edge . The Tango weighs 60 Oz ands 60 in .
Be intrested to hear any direct comparison .Engine swapped in the same plane .

I assume you're talking about the OS LA46 compared to the ST.
I've never had them both in the same plane but have had similar sized airplanes with the two engines.
My take is that the ST is a little more powerful, will definitely swing a larger prop with more authority and most certainly vibrates like a paint shaker.
The OS is much smoother running and while it is powerful enough for most classic ships would be challenged in anything much over 55 ounces in weight. I've seen th ST's fly quite well in 60+ ounce airplanes (not that I would recommended that but then I wouldn't really recommend 55 ounces for the OS either.
Bottom line...they are very different engines. The ST will shake a lightly built airplane to death prematurely the OS won't.
On the other hand the OSVF46 is another animal and very much more powerful and smoother than either of the others.

Thanks, it was the LA id meant.
Do these VF 40s and 46s run unpiped ? or is the timing all out for just a muffler. There rather similar to the FSRS 40.

Hi Matthew,
The ST 46 from my experiences, will fly a larger, heavier plane than the LA 46. The 46VF is a brute. It will fly on a header muffler just fine. It will still have to use a ~4 pitch prop, and fly it in a wet 2, but I don't know of many, if any, CLPA planes it would not fly. Ours did not like to run in a 4 cycle like the PAs, it needed to be turned up near 11,000 rpm.
If looking for an engine in that size range with gobs of power and will easily fly 60 oz., the the 40 VF, a header muffler, a 11.75-4.2 in a wet 2 is the ticket in the OS line.

The theory was one oz per .01ci, therefore a LA 46 is best with a model around 46oz, there is no doubt that a ST can pull more than this, due to partly to the ball race and mainly to the rest of the design- by accident or not- who cares, the ST still is one of the best 46's. However, a LA 46 in a classic design or a profile model is a great motor, we have them in a Kismet, Sheeks staggerwing, Cardinal profile, Chief, Veco Hurricane etc and, apart from the fuel consumption, a perfect fit. Whatever you do, feed with the right brew, plug and prop and either will fill you with joy. (as to what is the right brew and prop, well, that is another story!)
Both motors can do with a tweak or two but can run out of the box, if you can get an ST still in a box that is.
