PT-19 Prototype (restart)

Hi all,

I have restarted the PT-19 kit prototype.

After posting the first set of building pics., back in March I stopped to make the kits for the Imperial Ringmaster.

During that time I received some emails and had some phone conversations regarding being able to (moreso.. not being able to)
build the PT without a jig so here we are... I have set aside the first prototype and added tabs to the bottom of the ribs.
Now that everything has been recut, I have restarted building the (new) prototype.

Very nice feature. Are any/all of your future kits going to have this same feature on the rib tabs. Sure hope so.

Goldbergs Shoestring Stunter had those on 4 of the ribs.

Also the Buster, Cosmic Wind, Lil' Jumpin' Bean and some of their RC models with semi-symetrical wings. They got away with 4 ribs because their structures were simple. Of course that left you at the mercy of the straightness (or not) of the LE and TE. Still, it was a great idea.

By the way, the trade name was "Syma-Tru"

WU...I'm a little surprised that you're webbing the TE before adding the top TE piece. I'd think that might be a warp waiting to happen. But I assume you normally do it this way, with fine results? Steve

Remember how Midwest did it on the original?

They sliced a little piece off the bottom of each rib, so it lay flat on a board. Then you glue the little pieces back on when you can pick up the wing. Worked perfect for me. Capstrips & LE sheeting restore any loss of continuity.

Sure looks straight to me. This is one of my all time favorites. I came into the hobby when the trio from Midwest was thrust on the market. I have only collected the trio of the Cougar, Panther and the PT-19. Love this thread.

Well...
I don't think Al hollows too many blocks. Most of his construction is done the hard way (stronger) with built up sheeted surfaces on everything.
However given Al's Obsessive Compulsive nature I think his comment was a little "tongue in cheek".
Incidentally even I sand the inside of blocks and I'm not nearly the meticulous builder that Walter is.
One of the Stunt Champions of the past (who shall remain nameless) used to paint, rub out, and wax the inside of cowlings etc.
I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Randy Powell does that...Talk about Obsessive Compulsive......Uhhh Hi Randy.

the whole plane in the bones (taped together) weighs only 22 3/4 ounces.

What are you using to hollow out the blocks?

I noticed a Dremel 1/2" drum in the background- been there, with clogged lungs and a dusty room as a result.
Are you using a sanding table or shop-vac?
