1986 MAXIMATION

Info requested on this rare bird built by Ted Fancher. All I have is a small picture from "Model Aviation" (April 1986 page 65) All that tells me is that it is "Quadra" powered. Did it fly? What were the specs.? Is it still around. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Bill,

There must be a mix-up somewhere. Although I designed a number of "-tation" airplanes (The Citation, a series of Excitations, the Imitation and the Intimidation) I never did a Maximation. Never owned a Quadra either.

I'd be interested in seeing the picture if you can figure out how to scan and post it though.

I was told elsewhere that you didn't do it also Ted. But the picture says different, this thing looks like it has an 8 foot wingspan. LOL I will try to figure out how to post it. If I can't PM me an address and I will send a copy to you. I gotta tell ya, this thing is awesome. The caption reads:

Fancher throws down the gauntlet: "You ST .60 wimps had better watch out!" Ted is shown with the prototype of his 1986 Maximation. Power is a Quadra. (The pulses of the C/L Contest Board will quicken when they see this one.)

I remember that picture! Seems like it was Ted holding some RC Quarter scale or something. Can't remember exactly.

Here is the pic. Hope it's OK, had to use a lot of compression to get it under 50K.

BTW, for you younger guys, a QUADRA was a converted chain saw engine set up for model use. Sort of "first generation" of the larger engines.

It came out OK, but you didn't use compression, you used reduction. You can get a black and white picture up in 800 x 600 without a lot of compression at all. We are still having trouble explaining the difference between compression and size reduction, so you aren't alone. Maybe we need a tutoral on it.

Oh for the days when you could buy a 2 cu in motor for $89.95 from Balsa USA no less.Used a lot of them till I started wanting more power and started a 15 year ride in large scale models.

I just thought he pulled a Shareen! Good post! I do remember when the quadra came out. It did change the R/C world to the point the AMA had to limit weight for insurance.
Poor Shareen, this phrase is starting to stick!

I'd be interested! What programs are you using to "compress" a pic?

Anything saved as a jpeg is compressed. Another popular format to save that is not compressed is a tiff (tagged image file format) This is a lossless format. Compare a tiff to a jpeg and you can see that the jpeg can be as much as 1/20 the size of a tiff - through compression.

Perhaps that would be a good idea. For this photo, I scanned the entire page as JPG and cropped to the pic shown. It was over 200K at 72 dpi so I changed the resolution th 45 dpi to get it under 50K. Any less resolution and you could see the pixels.

I did not have to resize because the cropped portion was already less than 800. For most pics, after cropping I set the max dimension to 800 or less, then decrease the resolution to get it under 50K.

True, JPG itself is a form of compression so perhaps I used the wrong terminology.

Yup, that is me but it isn't my airplane. My darn memory has blanked out on the builder but there might be some info in the column. The airplane is a twice size Sig Banshee with, as noted, a Quadra for power.

Sorry Ted I don't believe you. The sooner you come clean with what appears to be a HORRIFIC VIOLATION of the P40 rules, the better it will be for all parties concern.

I had heard about some of the "loose" activities going on in the Norcal stunt scene but, until this picture, I didn't know things had gotten that bad.

Ah, sorry, Milton.

You gotta check the dates and the stunt history encyclopedia. Prior to May, 1986 the event was known as Profile "Quad", as in "four". Thus, at the time this bountiful beauty ran roughshod over the competition it was entirely legal.

Only later did the "wimp legislators" succumb to the whiny demands of the prissy little "40% of a single measly cubic inch, decaf, skinny latte" crowd. Turns out they were afraid the gas/oil mixture would soil their cucumber sandwiches.

Stunt has never been the same since.

No apology nacassary, I don't know how to make the little pictures bigger. I glad you did. We took this wing to Brodaks with us yesterday, instant success. Windy went nuts and filmed it for about 5 minutes. John Brodak loved it. We were even asked if we were gonna kit it.

To add to its size it is 1638 sq. in. without the tips. 22 in. root. and 17 in. at the tip. 85 in span. It will NOT be a profile. Someone asked me why, I just said WHY NOT. Stand by Bob, I will send you a few pics as we go along and you can post them for me.

Bill, Regarding the pics...I just use Yahoo groups to do all the work. (c/l flying fourum) You save them to your photo album which yahoo will compress and then just resave to your puter. Easy!

I use Irfanview.

I also recommend Irfanview, which I switched to exclusively from LView Pro. It also has a wonderful thumbnail viewer function that is instant and superior for quick looks at directories with a large number of graphic files.
