Need 1/2A cox shims and glow plug for grandkids to fly.

my six grandkids are almost finished each building a 1/2 A ambush plane. They are having a ball doing it. I have prepared seven cox engines, baby bees, black widows etc.. We have a need for 6 head shims to reduce the compression and avoid detonation. We also need two low compression heads for the same reason.

I was told that if when flipping by hand to start the motor fires back and forth between compression during the prime, the compression is too great and must be reduced, else you will ruin the motor.

If you have any of these parts and/or know where thay can be obtained; please respond.

The plan is to train the dads to start the motors, have the dads teach the kids to start their motors then we go on a big family vacation and start, fly, crash, glue, start, fly, crash etc. and have fun.

They carry shims. Also Galbreath conversion heads that use Nelson plugs.

What head are you using on your Cox engine? Are you using the standard Cox Head. The standard Cox head should not require more that one shim. How mucn nitro are you using.

Alternative head is the "911-049 MECOA plug adapter" head from Mecoa.com. It allows you to use a standard plug.

Two motors have the high compression head which needs to be changed out. They may be ok with one shim but you do not know until you run them. They may need to be decompressed with a standard and perhaps a shim or two. Burt Brokow told me you do not know how many shims are needed untilyou run them. The fuel used is 23% 50/50 blend with 10% Nitro Brodak fuel. The other motors have standard heads and one of the motors has a piston hitting the head even with one shim, hence the need for possiblly several shims.

IMHO Cox reed valve engines with one shim and a standard head are fairly well bullet proof on 15% nitro / 20% oil (Castor or 50/50 with castor/synthetic) fuel, PROVIDED everything is clean (reed valve, needle, etc.).

As for props - I've tried a variety of props on my Cox reedies and the two stand out performers (from my perspective, with my models) are the APC 5.7x3 and the black Cox 6x3 "rubber ducky". When I was a kid I used to get good flights with a white Tornado 5x4 as well. The black 6x3 will stand up to the rigours of use on a trainer far better than the APC 'though, and is less prone to cutting little fingers.

Another option for parts is to just buy entire "Sure Start" engines directly from Cox for only $7 each. Or you can pay a little more from the countless people reselling them on ebay.

The shims from a Norvel fit this engine too. I just bought a bunch from Lite machines (heli) on closeout. You could try them.

What is the part number? Is it the Vmax6 Gasket?

Thinking again about this, while I once had lots and lots of .005 shims from Cox I am pretty sure today's stash is only strong enough to supply Bob's needs as well as those of my own. Got a grandurchin building--very slowly!--the Jim Cameron-designed repro of the Fire Baby...

Of the .001 and .002 shims there are no doubt hundreds of the things in my shop. But when I hear a request for 100 of each, I smell "resale" in your request so they won't be free!

samd the models
attach the elevator
construct the leadouts and pushrod
drill for mounting the motor
dust spray one color coat
spray a wet clear ooat

Later I will spray the final clear coat.

THEN the dads and kids will assemble the planes, I will then teach the dads how to whack their fingers and tune the engine.

Then we will teach the kids the same and go out and

start,fly, crash, glue, start, fly, crash glue etc.

It will be fun.
