Phil Granderson, Again!!

Some new pictures from flying today. Phil has yet another plane. You will never beleive this, it is more beautiful than all the others put together.

Currently it has a VF40, with the PW magic 2-blade Bolly. Flies very nicely. Other photos are of 2 planes that Jim's dad, Rudi, built and flew with great sucess out here in WAM in the early days. Jim will be campaigning them once they age just a bit more.

Think about this, 3 pretty potent competitors. 3 very nicely rendered, different designs. 3 very different powerplants. PA 75, RhoJett 61, OS40VF. "The good times are now." Brett Buck.

He's learning...he's learning; if he stays at it and learns how to design beautiful airplanes and color schemes and learns how to paint then instead of mere light-years ahead of the rest of us he will extend on out to Tera-light-years ahead. Sheesh. Works of art; the trouble is he can fly, too.

Actually, such quality is never a surprise from Phil. (Wonder how much he would ask to design a paint scheme for me?)

Strange note on Phil At a VSC, about two years ago, he didn't even vote for his own plane, which would have won. The guy is too shy

Those "way" old time beasts are called Circle Kings: X1 (Green) and X2 (Orange). They were designed by my dad, Rudi Aron, in 1951 and were the the first two of five variations built in the span of about a year (hmmmm...sounds like Granderson). These two were both powered by Madewell 49's on glow swinging PowerProp 11x8 props. These two replicas also are powered by the original Madewells, although not with 11x8's (I get dizzy). Both engines fired right up on the stand after sitting in a box for 50 plus years...7,500 rpm of loud, nasty engine whether you want it or not!

The X1 and X2 are my earliest stunt memories as a two year old and I thought it would be a cool tribute to my dad to build replicas and fly them in Old Time. My dad built his in 3 months. I built mine in five years. Granderson I ain't. Unvailing them on Father's Day was a nice touch, though. I have not flown them yet, but I expect them to be akin to flying stunt with a B Team Racer.

X3 through X5 had more wing area and flaps and were pretty decent airplanes. They advanced him to Expert and a fairly impressive contest record in WAM's golden years. His later designs, The Cloudbursts, even resulted in a win or two against Bob Palmer. How cool is that?

FYI: Phil's Zealot looks even better in the flesh. Ceeerap, he's annoying!

An interesting thought on those three pretty airplanes is that the smallest one (David's) has the biggest engine and the biggest on (Phil's) has the smallest.

Yeah, wimpy little 40VF. I am surprised it can even get to the top of the circle, really. I might also point out that David and I are also transgressing - David's 75 uses a mere 13" prop and I am using an even more pathetic 12.5" prop. The 75 could probably swing a 16-6 two-blade, get some real good "stunt run" with that!

You had the right idea with that Quadra-powered Banshee.

It is hard to judge the size of the planes until someone is setting near them. Looks like they would be perfect for adding flaps and getting additional wing area without much weight gain.
They are nice looking airplanes. One of the local flyers here has a Madewell, it is noisy.

The finishes on both are front-row at any NATs, much much better than it shows in the pictures.

Seems there were lots of cameras in the parking lot yesterday. Here are a few more.

1.) Fitz practicing his “eyes closed” launching technique with Brett
2.) Brett trying to get him to open his eyes
3.) Brett deciding to go ahead and fly but quickly put his plane in “STEALTH MODE”, even though it couldn’t be seen we could still hear it!
4.) Brett out of Stealth Mode to show us a trick or two
5.) Dave, eyes open trying to spot his plane among the trees and buildings in the back ground
6.) Pretty planes, pilots have been “Touched-Up” to match planes

All pictures prove I’m no Elwyn when it comes to camera work.

Should have left my shades on for a couple of those pics. Spent two full days and nights getting the thing ready to fly on Sunday. Here's one touched up for me too!

I would point out that it's even harder to see it when you are flying! What isn't obvious is that it's still worse early in the morning - the backlighting is brutal. Oh, and the air is ugly even at 3 mph. Going to Muncie is like a dream world!
