Netezband DoodleBug weight

Gang,

Can anyone put their hands on the original design article for the Bill Netzeband's "DoodleBug 580" and tell me what the design weight was? This is the .40 size version.

A friend built a rather neat looking copy of the "DoodleBug", in eye-catching purple and yellow, but the performance, so far, has been a let down. We suspect that the problem is due to a final weight of 49 ounces. The performance was the same with either a tuned OS 40 FP or a stock OS 46 LA.

It certainly does make for a distinctive appearance in the air ! It can hardly be mistaken for a modified Nobler.

Dry weight should be 42ozs for the 580.

I'm curious about how specifically the performance has been a letdown. Stalling in corners, poor line tension, etc? What lap times have you been using? An increase in airspeed may perk it up, and trim adjustments could possibly help.

I have to agree with Kim. 49 oz may not be an ideal weight but shouldn't really be excessive with a 46 for power. The doodle bug has a fair amount of wing and a good airfoil it should carry that weight without trouble. I also suspect lines too long, too slow speed, improper CG, or other trim problems.
A little more information on the above criteria might be helpful.
