My P-40

Around 1998, I decided to build a 60 size P-40. I started with the Berkely P-40, which also was called the black tiger. In my younger years, I've built four Berkely P-40s. Around 1970 or 1971, I scratch built an XP-40 with a Fox .35 in it. I built two more XP-40s through the '70s.

Around 1998, I designed my 60 size version of the P-40. The wing I used was an SV-11 wing. I finally finished around 2002. I have flown in three meets in the past three years. The plane flies extremely well with an Tigre .60 up front.

The AVG group had this Walt Disney Tiger on the side of their planes. The decal is a 1/10th scale that fit the plane perfectly.

Like all your efforts I've seen at Brodak, very well done. Was hoping to see what you had this year at Brodak but appears you didn't make it. Hopefully next year.

That is a really great looking ship. I know the wing mounted gear are more scale like, but there was something about the fuse gear on the Black Tiger that just drooled cool. I keep looking at the plane in one of my old Sig catalogs, and think I will build one someday. To many planes, not enough time.

This is the original Black Tiger designed by Bob Elliot in 1952. I have always liked this design since I was 10 years old. It was kitted by Berkeley Models in West Hemstead New, York in 1953. Upon kitting it, they added a metal cowling to it. The actual kit design couldn't Hold more than a 2 1/2 ounce tank.

Stunt News, a few years back did the original article on it as the Black Tiger. This model had a cut-out in the wing to allow a four ounce tank to be used. I also cut my wing out to get the bigger tank in it.

I started building it in 1995 and has sitting around for years. I finally finished it in 2005. The plane has the 40th anniversery Fox .35 and is finished in all Brodak Paints and weighs 36 ounces.

P.S. My grandson flew it and he flies it better than I do. Imagine that, a thirteen soon to be fourteen year old flies this 56 year old design extremely well.

Your .60 P-20 looks great.

Several years ago I met Gen Charlie Bond who flew with the AVG group. We went to the same post office. He was a wonderful person.

Your P-40 sure captures the spirit of the AVG group.
