Good buy or Good Bye?

Another find/low bid win. I think it was around 8 bucks for the motor, but with a 8.88 UPS ship married to it. Received the motor sent USPS Parcel Post. No cost on the label....sent from San Bernadino to Oceanside, Ca. Maybe 100 miles max. What gives? Motor has been run maybe a few times by the marks on the backplate and a very clean piston. I took it apart, cleaned and oiled it. Great compression! 16 dollars but......

Sorry Rob,
What's your issue... a motor costing $16 ????
Whenever I buy anything of the bay (very rarely) I always count the p&p as a part of the cost

Are you unhappy that the engine was sent by a different method?

[photo not recovered: 29561.jpg]I'm not understanding what your heartburn is with this deal. $8.88 for shipping is not excessive, and the engine is no doubt worth the $8.00 cost. Also, the seller was up front and stated that there is some resistance when turning it by hand and the compression seemed weak. What are you upset about?
Bill Byles
Yes I don't understand either. I went to the link, and put in a LA Zip code (90125!) and it calculated $8.88 UPS ground shipping.
I can't figure out why there is so much bitching about this stuff lately (it seems to me). Less than $20 for and engine ---and it is clear from the link what the S&H is.
Alan
Nothing as to the motor cuz it in nice shape. The item stated UPS ground shipping for 8.88. It was shipped USPS Parcel post at 2 lbs. A big diff in cost. Right? I gave him good feedback anyway. I didn't know this kind of deception is acceptible today.
Rob Costido
How much did the box cost? How much for gas to the post office? Did the item arrive in some less of a fashion delivered by the mailman vs. the UPS guy? Life is too short.... [photo not recovered: sipcof.gif]
Rob, you must be living a sheltered life. $8.88 is just about standard shipping fee. I used to be able to charge $7 for the engines I sold on EBAY. I had to up it to $10 just recently to keep from losing $. I ship by priority with delivery confirmation. When you add in bubble wrap and the time to take it down to mail it you barely break even which is as it should be. If the engine had come to you broke then maybe you would have something to bitch about. Maybe....

Better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.
The shipping charge noted in the auction was $10.16 looks to me he gave you a discount.

Assuming the engine is in good condition (which apparently it is) this sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Uncle Mikey yes it was! I'm very happy with it..yes I got a deal. Guess I'm in the blind on the bay as it comes to the shipping. Didn't know you could charge BROWN TRUCK and send Darrel Waltrip in the white truck. (Not an old folk joke) No big deal here as it was a good one.
Rob Costido
Why did you buy it,then?....I'll buy it for 8 bucks plus 8 bucks shipping if you can't afford it:@ [photo not recovered: sipcof.gif] [photo not recovered: sipcof.gif] [photo not recovered: sipcof.gif]
Depending on how the seller packed the engine, Priority Postage might have been less that the UPS quote. I have occasionally overcharged on postage because I guesstimated the weight and it came out less. In these cases I have refunded the excess postage. If the payer uses PayPal (as most do) refunding is just click-click.
I have tried to convince my wife that we should always charge excess postage and then refund. Buyers would be convinced that we were really honest
I'll give you twenty bucks for it - and pay the postage.
Mild Bill
I'll send you 10 bucks if you promise not to post any more silliness like that

The title of this thread should be “Good buy AND Good Bye”!
The seller clearly lacks integrity. Advertising UPS at a fixed rate of $8.88 as a part of the “contract”, then shipping USPS at a cheaper rate tells you all you need to know about the seller. He / she (and many responders here) seem to feel that telling a lie for a couple of bucks is OK. I do not. What would be a serious lie? $10? $20? $1000? Never do business again with someone who has demonstrated by their actions that misrepresentations are a normal part of the way they do business. So the “Good Bye” part is a no-brainer.
That you got a “good buy” is also a no-brainer, which seems to be the general focus here. Perhaps the auction saw less than normal action because other potential buyers avoided the auction knowing something of the seller’s integrity. If that is true, it would be good economic justice for the seller. He has pooped in his own nest.
However, you didn’t say if you have actually run the engine yet.

You know, you can go on and on about how the seller "cheated" the buyer out of a couple of dollars (maximum) on shipping and stick to your principles, but in the end if you got a great deal on the engine you wanted then it is time to shrug it off and say that you got the item you wanted at a great price, shipping and all.
I don't condone cheating anyone on a deal and won't do it, but on this particular deal I would acknowledge that, yeah, I got done out of a couple of dollars and so what. It is time to get over it.

If you are implying "shrugging it off" means buying again from the same seller, I disagree.
Which was my point. In business, even in the hobby business or deals with friends, you learn who you can trust, and who you cannot. Sometimes you learn not to do businees with someone by getting a good deal, which is a pleasant way to learn.
That isn't "sticking to principles." It is common business sense.

I did not say anything about buying again from the same seller - that would be what you have said above; I would not buy again from the same seller. By the same token, I would not make a federal case out of a couple of dollars like you and some others on this thread are doing. He got a really good deal on this engine so let it go. Get over it.

[photo not recovered: sipcof.gif]Well said, Randy. For people to make such a huge deal over this is ridiculous. For all we know, the seller did not even intend to "screw" the buyer...giving the seller the benefit of the doubt he might just have not given it much thought and just sent it via USPS because the Post Office was 3 miles closer to his home than UPS - who knows? For two bucks (and I really doubt that the difference was even that much) who knows or cares...if these guys are so bothered then they just should not do business with the seller again.
Bill Byles
Interesting point, as a seller and a buyer this guy has never had a negative feedback. I don't think he intentionally charged more at all.

There is something here that no one has picked up on, but what I sent in a private message. First off, I don't think the seller cheated you at all. You contracted to buy the engine and have it delivered at this price. But the seller took a risk--a great risk in the way that he shipped it. If he had shipped it by way of UPS for the price that they charge (and that he charged you) it would have included insurance for up to $100 plus delivery confirmation, neither of which he contracted for by post office shipping. Now if he had shipped by post office, add $1.60 for insurance, plus whatever it is they charge these days for delivery confirmation and he is back up to the original price or thereabouts. In effect, he became self insured. Had the package not arrived or been damaged enroute, he would have been obligated to refund the money and have nothing. This is what he contracted for when he charged what he did. And you could file with e-bay and they would make sure that this took place. On the other hand, if you had said that it did not arrive, he would have no way of telling that it did or did not, nor would he have proof that he even sent it. Once again he would be obligated to refund the money. Thus his being self-insured would pay off very poorly to him. So I wouldn't say he cheated anybody except to put himself in great danger of loss.
You paid for an engine and for the price of shipping plus insurance and guarantee of delivery. You received the engine as promised, albeit by another carrier, but certainly at no loss of time or convenience to you. I would have no problem buying from the individual again. I may inquire, however, into shipping and ask whether or not it could be sent by post office at a cheaper rate. Often times when such inquiries are made, the individual will agree to the lower rates. But then, if you are agreeing to a shipping method without insurance, if it is lost in transit the burden may fall upon you. Your choice.

Aw, c'mon Dallas...don't go injecting common sense into this nonsensical discussion! Just when it had gotten way out there. As ol' Willie S. said long ago: "Much ado about nothing."
