So, how well did these things fly? My experience (all as a kid) was that, of the plastic models, the PT-19 flew relatively well, and I had a plastic Stuka that also flew, but only barely. I think it had a throttle (that didn't work well because of line drag using the supplied Dacron line).
I had some odd-ball WenMac (yes, I could get them started) things that simply didn't fly. I also had a lime green Cox "Lil' Stinker" Pitts with the .020. It didn't fly well, either, and so the motor was scavenged for other projects.
I never tried the various incarnations of the plastic Mustang and never saw one fly.

The price isn't really out of line as they all command a pretty steep
price. If this one was the rare maroon and chrome version then you would see it match the prices of an Aurura B-25 or Wen Mac P-38. It just might do so anyhow given the insanity of the bay.

I saw one of these airplanes at a yard sale still in the original box asking price was $5.00 and I didn't buy it, but I know who did. The buyer is a collector of old stuff and has a garage full of old stuff and lives up the street about 10 blocks from me.

The typical .020 or .049 powered plastic model was priced at $8. This beauty (justifiably) was priced at $25. Well worth the price, but still triple the alterative.
A genuine impossible dream for most customers. I guess Mr. Cox might have realized the error of his ways and never again went this far upscale again. Or maybe it was a design he just LIKED and was willing to produce it at loss.
I can see how a kid who couldn't come up with $25 in 1960 might cough up $700 from his 401(k). If I did that, I'd uncork it like a bottle of vintage champaign.

A friend gave me a Cox lime green Bi Plane with a 020 engine. New never flown or started with out box and papers. Any guess what it is worth.

My guess would be $75-100 if it's in perfect shape. You could check over on the .049 Collectors forum on Yahoo and probably get a better answer. I just checked and there's one on Ebay right now but it has the box and papers.
