NE Ohio Fly

The annual Lost Nation Air Show is the July 11th, 12th, and 13th.
This year, for the first time, there will be a demonstration of control line flying.
I have flown at Lost Nation several times, and the Airport Manager is a good friend of mine. He has flown control line and is a motorbike rider.
If you're in the area, support would be cool....
The airport also owns several adjacent soccer fields and there is a good chance that a contest site may evolve if the demonstration is successful.

I'm looking forward to seeing you & family. We missed you at Brodaks this year.

The CL demos will take place during the hours from 10:00 AM to 4:00 (5:00??) PM Saturday 7/12 and from 10:00 AM to about 3:00 PM Sunday.

The North Coast Control Liners club will provide some CL instruction for visitors who want to try out our hobby/sport as well as some demonstration flights. The club would welcome any other visiting control line flyers to fly with us here, since some of us are unable to attend due to unavoidable conflicts. No genius at the handle, I nonetheless try to participate in good opportunities like these to gain friends and - who knows - converts to the cause. Unfortunately, having aged another five years, I have one class reunion 240 miles away on 7/11-12 AND a family reunion, the same Saturday, 140 miles from that one. Then there's more emptying of the boyhood home which is regretably up for sale. Egaaaaads! I will try, if at all possible, to make it Sunday. It should be a great time!

Anyway, we are a friendly bunch who actively enjoy CL flying and always want to show others how creative and fun this hobby is. Anyone within driving distance who wants to have some fun with us, give the hobby a shot in the arm, and see some great full-sized aircraft too,...how about joining us? We may also be able to ease some tension between local folks and the aviation community. Plans are still progressing.

Lost Nation airport is east of Cleveland on Lost Nation Road, off of Rt 2. You can get close via I-90. Here's the map:

Well, the Lost Nation air show is over, and I had a blast!
Our control line demo flights attracted a lot of attention (more so than the R/C flights!), and other than Serge's close call with the Cleveland Police helicopter (oops), it was a safe, fun-filled day.

Thanks for coming out, Mike. Your flights added a lot and kept the attention of the folks, including the RC'ers, along our line. 'enjoyed talking with Les Nering and Will Hubin again too.

And - YES! - the P-Force survived another seven or eight flights, including the helicopter "attack". 'Heck of a down draft though.

I'm glad I made it back. 'had a great time and reaffirmed that spectacular, if not good, flying gets their attention too. Although some of my newer maneuvers are becoming too recognizable, it's the more violent "bail-outs" above that they seem to go for. Maybe I just won't tell my racing friends what to look for; then they'll stay happy.

Anyway I had a blast too!

If Dave Evar doesn't post, I'll see whether I can edit any of his pictures to size and post here. My photo editor balks at some files, and I haven't tried opening any of his digital files past just inserting them in the newsletter untouched.

Robert Heaton, the airport manager, reported that he was glad that you guys could make it!
The show is staged to raise funds to restore a B-29, and the downpour Saturday afternoon during "prime time" kept many spectators away....
Robert also reported that a couple of newbies from the FAA were especially annoying to the real aeroplane folks.
I'm glad that you guys were able to support the show!

Dave Evar made a CD of his recent event image files for our newsletter, and included some Lost Nations Demo pictures. I have managed to trick my Picture Processor into opening and editing them. Here are a few with reduced resolution to get under the 50 Lb limit. If they don't work out, I'll re-try.

Dave is developing some real digital photo skills. There were beautiful mustangs and one each of B-25, B-17, Mig 17 (in dark blue or black w/red stars), torpedo bombers, and others flying as background. Unfortunately several of our own top builder/flyers could not make the show, but it was a crowd success nonetheless - lotsa fun!

This should probably be best answered by one of the others, who watched from a stationary vantage point. Anyway, I don't have the whole picture...not unusual. Ha!

Not much of a story from here: I glimpsed a helicopter not too far off, then noticed the increaed rotor noise and some change in my P-Force's response in the day's gusty conditions. By the time it had my attention, the chopper was still closing and close enough that I worried about whether I should stay low or move to the cross-wind side. Then it lifted, changed course, and left. I don't actually remember how close got. That's about it from my perspective.

Perhaps they just didn't know we were there, didn't understand downwash effects, or were worried that we'd encroach on the runway you can see in the background of one of the shots. 'seemed though like an unnecessarily "close encounter."
